So I came out to my lease today to try and Call up a coyote. There are some cattle on the other side of the fence from me about 75 yards away. I start my sequence of calling with lone male howl, follow that up with a few female coyote howls. Wait a few minutes and hit the pup distress. The cows go absolutely apesh**! These storm down the fence line away from me about a half mile, find the entrance to my field and come charging right for me. I quickly packed my gear and hauled back to the car. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

More than likely just curiosity. I raise cattle and it is hard for me to hunt a lot of my places because if the cattle see me, whether in my truck on a four wheeler or in the Mule, they come running. That's good because that is the way I am able to gather them by myself. Sook, sook, and a feedsack and I can pen them all. Cattle by nature are curious animals and when they hear or see something out of the ordinary at least a few of them will come to investigate. That is not to say a cow won't run over you, I have had it happen many times over the years. Not hunting but trying to sort cattle in the pens is where it usually happens. I'd just go on about my business and move to another stand away from the cattle if possible because they more than likely will just stand there and stare at you and mess up your hunting anyway. Word to the wise, never get between a mama cow and a newborn calf if she doesn't know you. Even if she does, don't take your eyes off her.

All the time at a few of my hot spots. I just turn the call down they will look and maybe knock it over then wonder off when they figure out its nothing. I have tried a Mountain Lion call to run them away but they don't care. Best advice is to dump a half bag of cubes at the farthest point from where you will be setup. once fed they will usually stay put.

Yup , just stop calling and they wander off. It's a confidance booster to smart preds. I' once shot 3 male coyotes on one set that the longhorns kepts stampeding through. They'd bust through..I'd stop the call and then do a female challenge bark. In they came...boom! Then back to lightning jack..cattle came back... ...3x

Have had them come running in with the distressed cottontail call. One time recently they were surrounding my feeder pen so I started the call with the fawn distress and the got out of the area real quick! It was a wondrous sight!

Bust through where?’ Do you actually hang out while they charge in? I would have looked like a rodeo clown if I had hung out! I had a damn stampede headed my way!

So my cover is not blown? I figured with all of that chaos any coyote in the area would have been gone.

They are curious animals I wouldn't be surprised if one came in just to see what was going on

Alright, next time I’ll stay put and let them do there thing. Thanks for the advice. I’m still a newbie at this, I’m used to being dive bombed by feathered animals over water!

Its not gonna hurt anything to get up and move or maybe switch up your sounds and use prey sounds rather than coyote sounds. Was it daylight or dark?

And a good mama cow will give a yote a run for his breakfast before she let's him take her calf. I think that's what they are checking out.

The presence of cattle doesn't always mean the coyotes will leave out. I have called my cattle to my truck to feed and shot a coyote that was skulking around the edge of the herd. If cows are calving, you can bet your bottom dollar coyotes are not far away.

They will "drop" cover scent for you, if you choose to use it.

I have never had mine run at me while calling, but they have mingled through.

I was messing with a young doe with one of those Primos Can doe bleat calls and had two yotes show up. One of them didn't make it out.
I enjoy hunting for sure, but I think just watching the animals is what I enjoy most.

^^This!

Best coyote hunting is when the cows are calving!

Yes, seen it happen to us several times. We lit up a deer in distress call, and the cows came in all over us and were standing shoulder to shoulder. WE moved and didn't use that sound again.

I was with my BIL calling a couple of weeks ago and cows were the only thing we called in.
