I took off all last week, we hunted around Seymour on 25K acres every day but the 40MPH wind Thursday. It’s so dry out here the dogs looked like a dust trail, especially after the winds came through and blew out every bit of moisture. It was a rough week but we had some great dog work Monday-Wednesday. The coveys we found were big but most points were right under the dogs noses. They couldn’t smell for chit. A buddy and I had 11 dogs to run in front of the UTV’s, with three good veteran dogs. I think we have 1/3 of the bird we had last year with bad conditions. There’s a lot more beer drank when things are slow. With the tough conditions the dogs are running way big with 100 yard dogs running 300 400 yards trying to find bird. I shut some of my muts down this morning and started walk hunting prime areas to stop the track meet. What are y’all seeing.

Beats staying at home. That's what I have been doing.

Dry and dusty, birds running some, need a good rain. I have tried to make my trips after any moisture. Both trips where I didn't raise much dust on the road into the ranch scenting was real good for 2 or 3 hours. Older dogs are finding 1 or 2 coveys in an hour but the pups are having a tougher time. Always fun.

Friend wanted to work his dogs on some bobs yesterday so we went to my Zavala county place. Coveys at every feeder. It was nice and foggy there so the dogs could smell them just fine. He’s got some really good dogs.

Hunted outside Paducah this past weekend. It was really dry but we were able to find 13 coveys on Saturday and 6 coveys on Sunday morning. The skies turned orange Sunday with this winds after lunch so we just headed home.

I hunt the same place as Chet. 8 pointed coveys in 7 hours, 2 more flushed with the mule. I’m running 2 veteran dogs and 2 puppies.

Took wife on her once a year 4 hour hunt on a place in Baylor county that had a cr@#$ ton of birds last year. Had dogs on the ground about 3 hours, foggy for first hour. Found two coveys, both 8 or 9 birds, super wild saw one covey running at a blue quail pace for about 30 yards and then took off. Wife didnt fire a shot. Got this nice pic of my eleven year old waiting on wife to get there was about only highlight

It has been a tough year. Too dry. Bird counts are down and most of these birds won't hold. Maybe they've been harassed by coyotes too much, I don't know.

I'm only planning one more hunt.
But to me, it ain't about the showing, it's about the coming and the going.
We still have fun.

Good, every now and then she has a brain fart, and I have to enforce training. This morning was a pretty difficult scenting conditions with little to no wind. But when she did point her first covey, she didn’t wait for me and busted the covey. The next point I was ready. When she pointed a single and flushed it, I corrected her after about 3 steps. The next 2 points were rock solid.
