Still plugging away at the high fence property, trying to deal with the unwanted hogs trapped within the fences. The owner thinks there are still some big boars in there, but I don't know. This is about as big as I have shot so far. Maybe the big ones are hiding better? I set up to watch a feeder and while the boar apparently passed close to it and spooked the deer, he did not go to the feeder and I spied him about 90 degrees off east of the feeder and moving away. I didn't have much of a shot, but made the best of it that I could...

Can the ballistics of the 7.62x39 be as affective as the 6.5 at this distance?

Can the ballistics of the 7.62x39 be as affective as the 6.5 at this distance? The ballistics are different, but at 91 yards, 7.62x39 is still within its effective range. I would not see any problem with using it this close.

Typically all I hunt hogs and deer with is a 7.62x39. It is very effective past 100 yds. Once you get to 175 or so it it starts to drop pretty quickly. I shoot 123 gr Hornady (zero @ 100) and at 150 it drops 1.7", at 200 yds it drops 6". I also will shoot 155gr Herter's soft point for a little more punch.

Well done DNS. Need to send you my SIL for how to kill a pig training. He has shot and lost another.

Thanks guys! Unfortunately, earl39, I have lost my share of hogs. If you spend enough time looking for missing hogs, you learn to shoot better. The sad thing is, you can make a decent shot and if you don't do significant damage to the CNS, the hog may still run. Based on hogs I have necropsied, a hog with a blown heart (and injured leg) still made it 75 yards. I have had double lung shot hogs go over 100 and single lung shot hog go nearly 200. I made a .223 Barnes TSX shot on a hog that went through the liver and clipped the bottom of a lung and the hog ran at least 400 yards. That was the straight line measurement, but between where it was shot and where it ended up dead. No doubt it ran farther than that as it didn't run in a perfectly straight line. I liver shot a big boar with a .45-70 that did not exit and the boar made is just about 100 yards. Those are probably more along the line of worst case scenarios, but they illustrate the potential of lethal shots not dropping hogs when they are hit. TXAg08, that is a Reaper head on a Slik Pro 700-DX. It is what I use when I am stationary, such as when I am set up in the back of my truck. For stalking, I use a Primos Trigger Sticks tripod.
