Never hunted before but we are covered up in them this year? I've heard the rib-eye in the sky analogy but is it worth a 3-1/2 hour drive to shoot these things?

Yes, I enjoy shooting birds, but, the only ones I enjoy eating are sandhill, quail, pheasant & the occasional goose.
You'll need the Tx migratory game bird endorsement & federal sandhill crane permit.

Went on a 2 day hunt for sandhills for the first time this year. Limited both days. GREAT hunt & lotsa fun! Trip was 5-1/2 hours for us, but it looks like it'll be an annual trip from now on!!!

And you can shoot lead and don't need the duck stamp either. What's not to like?

Granted, it has been many years since I hunted them, but the GW took our shells and used a magnet to make use we were not using lead shot. It was fun, but also the coldest I have ever been. Had to lie on top a snow bank in a bar ditch, covered by a white sheet. There was nothing between Tahoka, TX and the North Pole but a 5 strand barb wire fence that day. And the fence was missing two strands.

Are they really that tough to hunt?
There's about 10 billion of them out here and on my buddies farm you can't hardly get them to leave even when you shoot in the field with rifles to try to get them to leave.

However, Wildlife Management Areas and Federal Wildlife Refuges have special regulations requiring nontoxic shot for ALL game birding, including Sandhill Cranes.
