I have a model 7 260 that my son will outgrow because of the small stock. Would you say it is worth it to build him a 6.5 Creedmore or go ahead and get a 270?

Why not get a new stock?
.260 Rem and 6.5 Creedmoor are ballistic twins.

I don’t see a reason to change to a 270, nothing your going to do with it you can’t do with the 260 or 6.5 creedmore.
I agree with the above restock and go on

This stock on a M7 260 would be a nice hunting rifle. M7 B&C Stock

Does that stock convert it to an adult length of pull?
I realize they are ballistic twins, however, there are many more factory loads of 6.5 on the shelf. Even if you change out the stock and rebarrel it then you have quite a bit of cash in it. That's why I was considering building a 6.5 or going to a 270 for something different.

Check with the seller, but that appears to be an adult stock.
I have one on my MRC 260 and it is one of my favorites.

There's no reason to pick a 270 anymore if 6.5 CM is an option. Either keep it as a 260 and spend your savings on reloading, or make it a 6.5 and shoot factory ammo.

The 270 is more gun than the 6.5 Creed. Don't kid yourself. No reason to get a Creed if you can have a 270.

Why do you need many factory options? Surely one of the ones currently on the market in .260 does just fine on animals.

One is a match and the other is the SST. The gun shoots the SST well and my son shot an axis and a whitetail in the neck and they never got up however there was no exit wound and the axis took a while to expire even though he hit him dead center of the neck. Yes both shots killed them in their tracks but I have always been a fan of the Hornady interlock bt that comes in the 6.5.

The 270 is more gun than the 6.5 Creed. Don't kid yourself. No reason to get a Creed if you can have a 270. With the new 145 ELD-X, Hornady is making the 270 competitive. But that's all they've done - make people who already own a 270 think twice about switching to a 6.5. The 270's 145 ELD-X is basically the same ballistically as the 6.5 143 ELD-X. But with the 270, you get no ballistic improvement in trade for a 40%-50% recoil increase, more powder for reloading, and no availability of high-BC target bullets for long-range shooting. Essentially, the 6.5 can still do everything the 270 can do, and it can do some of it the same and some of it better. Doesn't mean the 270 is inadequate, but there just isn't much of a reason to pick a 270 over a 6.5 anymore IMHO.

Chad can probably load you up exactly what you want and save you a bunch of money in the long run. New stock+ ammo from chad and he’s in business.

That's a good idea. Get Chad to load you up some ammo for the 260. Done.

Maybe we will try that for next year. After that if they don't make a stock that increases the length of pull then he will outgrow the gun. I guess I just wasn't much of a fan of the little short light barrel.
Cool thing is my dad bought the gun for my mom back in 99 or so and she never shot anything with it and neither did he. He passed away from cancer about 4 years ago and he loved my son more than anything. My boy killed his first two animals with that gun last week under one of my dad's old feeders. I hope he got to see it.

have the barrel set back a rechambered to 6.5 creed if you must do something. wont cost much. there ia probably a daddy somewhere who would give his right nut, AND A GOOD TRADE, for his son to have that gun the way it is though!

I wish the rifle manufacturers would make 8 or 9 inch twist barrels for the 270 WIN so the bullet manufacturers could make heavy high BC bullets for it. Then the 270 would out perform most of the 6.5s at long range. Until then 6.5s have the BC advantage.

Competitive? Not all of us are into shooting past 400 yards or punching paperfor extended periods. The recoil argument is getting pretty thin when your talking 270 vs the 6.5 and the real and proper place to brag on the 6.5 is that it is a better hunting round than the 243. As a target round the various 6MMs twisted fast are real competition. And just how many yards does it take for the 6.5 to catch up to the 270? Well past any point I would be shooting at game animals for sure and probably farther than you could count on expansion anyway.

Presently that advantage is small .525 BC for the 270 and .585 for the 6.5. And by the time the Creed catches up it is far past reasonable shooting distance on game animals. As a target round the Creed is a better choice, but as a hunting rifle the 270 wins.

I don't know if there's custom barrels made yet, to stabilize it. In my opinion it is going to serve a small niche. It will be for the hand loader that already has a large amount of brass on hand, and he re-barrels his .270 for another .270 with a more agressive twist, to stabilize those bullets. Otherwise, everyone else buying, or building a new rifle might as well do what had always been done, when they cared about BC, and that us go straight to 7mm.

Now you've done it, the Creedsters are going to beat up on the 7-08 now for its horrendous recoil!
