At the risk of sounding like an idiot, does anyone have any recommendations on books to learn about planting food plots - what to plant, when to plant it, etc. I haven’t done food plots in the past and want to get it done this year.

There are several books, not many worth buying in my opinion. Food Plots = farming.
Do you have access to a tractor & implements? How many acres do you plan to plant / utilize as food plots?
Is there now or will there be livestock on the property?, if so you'll need a way to fence them out.
Food plot for mainly deer, or for deer & all other game/wildlife?, makes a difference in seed selections. What grows well in one area might not in another. You'll have to check with locals / county ag extension office or be more specific with where these food plots will be. What & when to plant varies by area of the state, sometimes even areas of a single county. Are you wanting to plant every fall & again in spring? or do you want to establish food plots viable enough to return on their own for a few years after the initial 2 - 4 plantings?
Start with soil tests, amend soil accordingly. prepare a clean & firm seed bed, plant seed at correct depth, pray for rain. when you don't get rain plant again, when the second planting fails from lack of or too much rain plant again, if the army worms or grasshoppers get it plant again.
