A couple of friends and myself are contemplating a DIY Pronghorn hunt to Wyoming. I really don’t even know where to start with research. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any PP? I can give you some info if wanted. Good areas take at least a couple of PP but you can draw a tag in the random draw but they are few and far between. How about some doe tags for this coming season and then an any antelope tag with 1 PP next year?

I had WTA http://worldwidetrophyadventures.com/tags/state-wyomingPut my tags in for Wyoming. Its cheaper and they handle all my applications. Best move I ever made. There are alot of guides out there. Peter Pi Jr of Corbon ammo guides and that is who ill have take me out. Traveling that far I want to make sure I at least have someone that knows the area. Its worth the extra couple hundred bucks

No need for a guide, DIY is the way to go. Lots of areas have trophy bucks. Wyoming is 50% public land so no need to pay for an antelope hunt. A 5 day hunt would be plenty of time to find a nice buck and fill some doe tags, maybe get in some sage grouse hunting along with blue grouse in the mountains. Fishing is awesome that time of the year. We do have a random draw for a few tags in almost every area that can be drawn with 0 PP, but having at least 1 or 2 opens up some better areas. Onx maps chip in a GPS is necessary if you get an area with lots of private. I live in Laramie , Wyoming and hunt many parts of the state. Lots of info out there, you should check out Hunt Talk or Eastman's forum for hunters help with info. My B&C buck came from an area not know for trophies. Here's a few decent bucks from non trophy areas.

antelope is easy to draw. if you archery hunt there will be very few people there. we hunted a unit that had a lot of checkerboarded BLM land mixed with private land. had to have a GPS unit open at all times to ensure you were on public land. was a fun hunt, mainly because of who I was with. your tag is good archery or rifle.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nice bucks! Wyoming has been one of my favorite states to hunt for years. Love hunting Pronghorn antelope and the meat is one of the best IMO. Thank you for posting this!

If you're talking Wyoming, archery and rifle are the same tag. Some areas can be drawn with 0 PP but are not the best for access. They can yield bucks with work and time hiking in.

Go to gohunt.com and subscribe to their insider service it's fantastic and will let you narrow down ye areas you can draw with no points and still find good access.

I've hunted Wyoming Pronghorn and currently have 8 points. I'm saving up points for southwest WY. Pick a unit that has some public access (see unit map on WY DNR website) and a high probability of drawing (make it your second choice). Go later in the season and you may be able get private access for a small access fee. The northeast is easy draw but petty much tied up by guides. Last time we hunted we went to Lusk. But that was seven years ago. Good luck.

Check the Wyoming G&F website for drawing odds, some of the services post up wrong drawing odds, go right to the source, G&F posts the drawing odds for each area and the number of applicants for 2nd and 3rd choices. No need to pay for the info that may be wrong. A couple of PP will do wonders for drawing a better area for access. Check winterkill in SW before you apply. It had drought and winterkill last year.
All of the population estimates and season dates and limitations will be out in March and April before apps are due. Things could change drastically by then. You will need to line up access before the season if possible.
Doe tags are random draw and cheap.

Wytex, do you get population estimates from the website? I've seen the success percentages but not the population estimates. Thx

Job completion reports have the population numbers. At the bottom of the hunting page under hunting resources is the link for job completion reports.

jnd59 you might want to look other part of the state for a trophy with those PP. Last winter was a little rough in SW wyoming but rest of the state faired well over winter. Little snowpack this year but winter isn't over yet. The Red Desert and central part of the state had some big bucks this fall. You can get a great area and do some great fishing and possibly some sage grouse hunting while on that antelope trip with 9 PP next year. 8 this year gets you into a good areas as well. Take a look over on Hunt Talk for some good antelope advice.

Thanks. I've got a couple of years and may take my youngest. That would give us 5.5 as an average. Then we may try for a high draw and 43 (or 47, i can't remembered which. It's the unit they were going to put windmills on)as our backup. I haven't gotten serious about units yet but if the southwest doesn't bounce back by then I'll go for central. Appreciate the info.

Also, find a place to practice long shots from a prone or kneeling position. I thought because I practiced at 200 grouping 3 to 4 inches high I would be good to 350. I wasn't. Next time I will practice to 400 just to be sure. Had several good stalks though, that was the fun part.

I'm thinking those wind turbines are going in 42 or 43, should make a mess of the hunting while they are working and I wonder if some private access will be lost due to worries about shooting the turbines.
You will need to know where your rifle hits at 300 yds. A bipod and knee pads are essential.
