one of my clients has a ranch in south texas with too many turkey....way too many.
since shooting them isn't feasible anyone know an agency that will trap and relocate them to boost populations in another area?
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Contact game warden in the area. Or the Ntl Wild Turkey Federation http://www.nwtf.org/

Most trapping /restocking I've heard of is Easterns. I know Tjack on here is involved with that. Rio population's not in jeopardy statewide where restocking is an issue. I know you're already aware, but you could get rid of some by scheduling some thinning hunts. Tjack has committee and youth hunts with the Houston chapter of NWTF and would welcome the opportunity to help thin them out.

^^This. Our wild turkey population was hunted to extinction in the early 1900s. In the mid 80s the Canadian branch of the NWTF helped relocate a couple hundred birds here from somewhere in the US and we now have about 100,000 province wide and a spring and fall season. Probably the single biggest conservation success story in the history of our province.

TPWD is the only agency that can trap them (assuming the ranch is in Texas), but they may not eagerly respond to you at first because there are several logistical hurdles that state agencies struggle with. They have to find a place to take them and sort out who pays for the operation. That's where NWTF will help, they may already have a place in mind and are just looking for a source of birds. I would call them first and let them deal with TPWD.

Turkey are trying to come back in my area in north east tx but they are eastern birds stocked by parks and wildlife years ago, I believe they traded deer for them. This is the first time I have seen any in the fall in the 20 years I have owned the place. On rare occasions I see or hear one or 2 in the spring.

TPWD trapped hundreds on our ranch in the early 80s. Relocated most of them to Kansas.

I know an old rancher who had way too many turkeys that roosted on his house and in his trees around the house, all the time creating a mess. He set his gooseneck stock trailer in the yard and started baiting it with corn every day. After 3 weeks or so he had his ranch hand sit in some brush close to the trailer with a rope tied to the trailer gate. A good bunch of turkeys got in the trailer and the ranch hand jerked the door shut and turkey relocating got started. His ranch hand drove the trailer full of turkeys to the old rancher's most distant pasture and opened the trailer gate. I know this is/was not legal, but the old rancher got it done and no turkeys were hurt in the relocation process. And more importantly, no relocaters were arrested. Every time I think of that old rancher telling that story, I get a chuckle. The old rancher met his maker a few years back, so the statute of limitations has run out for the old man. He specialized in getting stuff done, even if it was not always the correct way.

I know West Texas A&M has done it in the past.
