Late Friday evening, I managed to shoot a doe on public land in Tennessee. By the time I found her it was twilight. It was then I realized my headlamp was not in my backpack. So field dressing was mostly by touch, not by sight. I haven't field dressed a deer in over 30 years. Luckily, I only nicked my hand three times. Then it is a 3/4 mile walk back to the truck to retrieve the deer cart, walk back to the deer, load it, and haul it back to truck.

In Texas, I would have been sitting in a blind, hunting over a feeder. If I shot one, I could drive my Ranger up to it, load it, and take it to to the barn for proper cleaning. The barn has a winch and water and light. Plus the barn fridge is right there as well.

I do miss hunting in Texas.

A lot of states have special rules and allowances for people who are disabled. In Texas, those rules apply to everyone.

Are you suggesting that everyone in Texas is disabled in some way or another?

No they just hunt like disabled people, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Sounds like good exercise. Maybe a little more preparation for next time and it will go smoother.

No place like Texas. My brother lives in Tennessee. He’s still hunting Texas. texas

How about you and I posting up the bucks we both killed spot and stalk hunting? Mine will all be from a low fence free range ranch native mule deer and white tail in Texas. And I invite other members to join in so you can show us how it’s done.

I like my laid back, easy Texas hunts, but it’s a lot of fun and very satisfying to bust your hump on public land, too.

I like duck hunting as much as the next guy, but it's a pain in the asss. There is somthing to be said for dove hunting. You don't need camo, waders, a boat, calls or decoys, just a lawn chair and a shotgun. You don't even freeze your butt of while doing it.

Don't need a lawn chair either, but I guess that is how disabled people might do it. roflmao

Time and place for both

I like sitting in a pop up watching my feeder bow in hand during early season and I also enjoy sitting on a ridge looking for animals I may have to walk a mile to in order to get a shot

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have a friend that moved to Idaho eight years ago. After a few years of "real hunting" now flys down here to come hunt in comfort. Kinda nice having blinds or stands. Retrieving your deer with a fourwheeler. A well lit cleaning station and ranch house. Almost sounds like fun to me.

I haven’t found a place to hunt in Texas I can afford, so I drive 8 hours to hunt public land in Oklahoma. Old school pack my gear in, and hopefully back out with a deer. My trip this year was late October with temps in the low 20’s. Getting too old for tent camping, so may have to bite the bullet and pony up some $$.

Really? You miss texas hunting after you had to actually HUNT and you successfully killed a deer on public land? THAT is WAY more of an accomplishment than half the fat rednecks in this state that sit on their asses in their blind with buddy heaters...

Congrats! I enjoy hunting public more than my lease in waco because it's more of a challenge. I feel like hunting the lease is too easy sometimes.

To me, the story behind the deer is way more cool than the actual size of the deer. I'm more proud of my public land buck this year I got with my bow than any of the deer I have shot sitting on my butt in front of the corn feeder...

I have a few spots on Public land in East Texas that I have scouted and hunted many times. I like to get away from my lease every now and then, break out the ol climber stand and head to the national forest. I have killed a nice 8 pt out of national forest before. It seems there is more and more hunters every year heading out into national forest to hunt, or atleast that is the case where I have been hunting.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

I have a standing offer to hunt for free in Texas, if I want to. But Alabama considers Texas a CWD state and is very strict on how a Texas deer can be brought back here. Basically no skin or bones. Only processed meat and the antlers are allowed.

If that is the case then why do you still lease and sit on your butt watching a corn feeder?

Why have a lease at all?

When I was a young(er) man, I often dreamed of hunting the old fashioned way. At 60 with a bad back and two arthritic knees I still enjoy my public land hunts. It's just the pain I have for weeks after I successfully harvest an animal that reminds me I'm no longer a spring chicken.

To each his own is what I say. Its not about the kill its about the getting out and enjoying your surroundings. Ive got box blinds and tripods I enjoy each of them equally until it gets cold then I enjoy, one of the 3 with a buddy heater. I have a buddy who went to hunt Ok this year and the family is ready to come back to Texas. In my opinion there is no better place to be than Texas. We welcome you back home to Texas
