I have a savage 99 in 250 savage. 250 savage is expensive, and hard to come by, and I’ve given thought for a couple of years about rebarreling it to 22-250. If my thinking is correct, the 22-250 is reloaded using the 250 savage brass, so the magazine and bolt won’t need any adjustment. I’ll just need to get a barrel, chamber it in 22-250 and have a gunsmith thread it to for the action and put it on for me. On something like this where I can’t just order a savage 99 barrel in 22-250, where do I start? Order a barrel blank and find a gunsmith? Find a gunsmith first? Is this something most gunsmiths can do? Or am I going to have a hard time finding a smith setup to do something like this? I’d imagine not many smith specialize is customizing old 99s. Give me some guidance!

I know the questions you will ask. This gun is sentimental, but it’s also fully functional. I don’t want to put it in the safe and buy a 22-250. I want to shoot THIS gun without breaking the bank. I’d rather spend the few hundred to do the work, than to constantly have to hunt down ammo and pay $2 a shot.

Go straight to a gunsmith.

Why not make 250 ammo from 22-250 brass and leave the rifle in original condition?

Yep, start here. I wouldn't do anything without talking to the gunsmith you want to use.

I believe in the past someone on here made mention of a smith that had a vast history with 99s. I'd start there. One of our members collects 99s, he might be a good source of information if he sees this thread.

Unless you just want the smaller caliber and are going to shoot it A LOT, I would likely also talk to Chad about working up a .250 load and seeing what it would cost. Midway has Hornady .250 brass for $.80 and I bet you can find it cheaper than that. Save your empties and send them back to Chad?

Some smiths mentioned here:

I don’t reload, and honestly don’t have the time or space to start.

Not a bad idea, but I asked him in the past and he wasn’t set up to do it, and if I remember right it was going to cost me the same as buying factory ammo, plus the legwork of finding brass. But if something has changed there, hopefully he chimes in. I have a couple of deer rifles already, and don’t have a varmint caliber currently, so even if I had ammo, it likely wouldn’t get used.

Unless you have some attachment to the rifle, why not peddle it? It's kind of collectible in original condition and it would be a shame to alter it. Maybe you can swap it for something you'd rather have.

I agree with Sneaky...go see the gunsmith you want to use. If they don't want to do that work, it's probably no someone you want to be using.

Having someone like Chad load a couple of hundred rounds for it would be less expensive than rebarreling the rifle and still leave it in original condition.

On converting it to a different caliber, the bolt face is the same as any 6.5 CM, 308 parent case round. So there are many caliber options to rebarrel it. The only issue with the 99 model is the lever action does not have much locking force. I have seen 2 of these rifles get damaged from a warm/hot round (one was the guy next to me at the range) and damage the rifle. I personally would not rebarrel a 99. I'd keep it the same.

If you kept it 250 Savage, I can load new ammo with Hornady for about $180-190 per 100 rounds. With your once fired brass, I'd be about $130 per 100 rounds, depending on what bullet. Once you have the brass, it's cheaper to load for it.

If the gun has sentimental value I wouldn't change it. If it doesn't have sentimental value I would keep it and get someone to load for me, keep it and not shoot it, or sell it and get what I wanted.

In reality I already reload so I would keep it and reload for it.

it is gonna be about a grand to re-barrel. you could buy 500 bullets at your calculation , that is more than i will shoot out of a lever.

If you rebarrel post some pictures

how much shooting do you do?

at $2.00/round, that isn't much. a box of .22-250 ammo is about $26/box, which is $1.30 a trigger pull.

I would leave it alone....your throwing a dollar at something to save a few dimes.

The cost of re barreling it would buy a lot of ammo! I would not butcher a Savage 99 in good shooting condition!
