I'm in the market for a new rifle and I'm beginning to go through analysis paralysis. I'm looking for a rifle for target shooting yet light enough to take deer hunting. This will be my first experience with long range shooting. I've pretty much settled on the 6.5 creedmoor, and thought I was settled on the Tikka CTR but not sure if some other options may be better.
I've always had Remington 700's with sporter barrels, but I don't like going to the range and getting flyers after shooting 3-5 rounds from the barrel heating up too fast. I would like to keep the base rifle under 8.5lbs. I really like everything I've seen from the Tikka but I really do not like the plastic stock and know I would be wanting to change it soon. My budget is around $1k so I'm curious if there may be a better fit.
Some of the others I've been looking into are the Remington 700 5R Gen 2, Christensen Arms Mesa, and the Montana X2. I'm curious to hear what many others with more experience with different rifles think would be a good fit.

I have the CTR, and the 5R. For what you've described, get the Tikka. I hunt with both, from a blind shooting off of bags and off the ground prone using a bipod. I don't mind lugging the 5R with a VX-6. It's of course heavy but shoots like a laser. Look at some of my posts. Of the two, the 5R is a better shooter and has greater velocity than the CTR due to 4 more inches of barrel and 5R rifling. I only recommend the CTR over the 5R because of your hunting requirement. Myself, I'm a hunter that wants to shoot the very best I can. If I was a long range shooter that hunted every now and then, I'd get the 5R.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I've yet to see a Tikka CTR not do exactly what it was built to do. I've had more than one customer bring them out. Some on hand loads, some on Hornady Match ammo. All performed very, very well.
A Remington will need a Timney trigger, Tikka will not. The Remington has a 90° bolt throw, the Tikka has a 70°. No brainer, in my opinion.

This is where the Tikka CTR shines right out of the box at 7.5 lbs. I've used mine for hunting the last 2 years including a trip to West Texas last year for mule deer. I thought the stock was ugly until I bought it, shot it and hunted with it. It's better than it looks in pictures.

The 5R will shoot, at least mine does with a 175 smk and IMR 4064. The stock is decent but as was mentioned, it would be wise to drop a trigger in it. It’s gonna run a little heavier than what you want. The Tikka will also shoot, won’t necessarily need a trigger but the stock is garbage, imo. Weight wise it fits the bill for what you want.
If it were me I’d choose the Tikka for the criteria you’ve given. The 5R is no slouch, I just think it’ll end up being a bit heavier than what you’re looking for.

The only thing I’m not fond of is the mag release. It doesn’t take much at all to drop the mag and I can definitely see losing one while hunting.

I've got the Tikka CTR in 6.5 creedmoor. It's been very accurate from the first shot. I get 8-10 rounds before it heats up and it really doesn't even shoot that bad when it heats up (compared to my Tikka Varmint anyway).
Standard groups with factory Hornady 140 ELD-M are around .5". I just got dies over Christmas break to start loading for it. If it does better than .5", I'll just consider that icing on top of the cake. All I'm really trying to do with it is keep the .5" groups going with cheaper ammo. But I won't be shocked if it starts shooting in the .2"-.4" range, based on my experience with my Tikka Varmint.
The Remington can be made accurate with enough time and money and a $150 trigger. The Tikka will shoot right out of the box.
If you're in the area, you're welcome to come check mine out. The stock isn't as bad as it looks online.
If it's going to be a hunting rig, I'd get the 20" barrel. My 24" is pretty big and pretty heavy.

A lot of owners had an issue with the mag dropping at recoil. Not out, but low enough to cause the next round to not cycle into the chamber. I opened up the slot at the back of the magazine so that the catch grabs it better. Problem solved. I'm going to shoot mine at the THF challenge, leaving my 5R at home. Since it's what I hunt with when not in a blind as much, I want all the practice with I can get. The only thing I’m not fond of is the mag release. It doesn’t take much at all to drop the mag and I can definitely see losing one while hunting.

There was a video floating around on the Hide of a heavy accented, tatted up fellow showing how he remedied the loose CTR mags. I don't remember them being that loose when they first hit the shelves (T3 version I guess), but I haven't played with but one of the T3Xs recently.
I'll see if I can run it down.....

At the top of the slot on the mag, just bend it out, maybe about a 1/16" creating a lip. Try that. A lot of owners had an issue with the mag dropping at recoil. I'll see if I can run it down..... I wouldn't say mine is loose but it takes almost no pressure to drop it. I will bend it out a tad like onlyS&W suggested. I wish TIkka was like Sako. Sako you have to push inward on the mag, and then press the button to release. Much better design.

That’s not necessarily true. My 5R was shooting outstanding right out of the box with 165 Barnes TSX. I later chose to drop in a Jewell, but this was before I knew anything about issues with their triggers and only because I wanted a very light trigger on this rifle.

I really like everything I've seen from the Tikka but I really do not like the plastic stock and know I would be wanting to change it soon. My budget is around $1k so I'm curious if there may be a better fit. Hopefully you don't have an expectation that you will not like the stock just based on reading what everyone else says about it on the internet. Truth be told, the stock is plenty good enough to do anything you need it to do. Pay attention to your optics choice and make sure you have a scope/ring combo that's low enough to get a good cheek weld with the stock as is. Get a 6-9 Harris, slap it on, and go shoot it! Spend some time behind the rifle before you pass judgement on whether the stock is junk or not. it'll get the job done, and there's way more important things to worry about before you get to that!

Agree. I did exactly as mentioned. My CTR shoots great off of the bipod, stock is plenty rigid. I hunt in the weeds a lot, and from a sandy river bed, so I painted mine. I couldn't justify replacing the stock but it is at Scalpel Arms getting Cerakoted Bazooka Green for $75.

My Remington 5r "millspeck" was very disappointing, my CTR is as accurate as I hoped it would be. My vote definitely goes to the Tikka!

The 24" Tikka is not that long, till you put a can on it! Mine was amazing right out of the box with Hornady 143gr ELD-X Precision Hunter ammo.
