Cricket standing his birds at 40 yards

Delivering at heel, left handed.

Hunted some nice country today

My son is still on Christmas break from college so I am getting to spend some quality time with him and the Pudelpointer. Last week was Woodcock in the piney woods in tight cover where he closed up his range to keep contact with me and pointed 15 woodcock . Today we hunted wild quail in west Texas. In the open cover he opened it up and rolled. It was a brisk 7 degrees when we got out of the truck this morning but it has warmed up to 16 now. Quail numbers are not what they were last year, but the young dog is putting in some nice work, and managed to pin 8 coveys in an area that gets heavy hunting pressure. Several of them from 30-40 yards. Cricket is almost a year and a half now. He is still pretty green, but he is showing me a keen nose and really putting together how to work wild birds. The best work of the day was a covey that kept running out from under his point, causing him to relocate 3 times. He kept contact on a cross wind and eventually pinned them at 35 yards. Atta boy! All in all a heck of a good time.

Sounds like a great nose. You should put him in a NSTRA trial.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Thanks for the vote of confidence sir. I have not worked him on any pen raised birds and don't want to go there. Just tried to get him on as many wild birds as I can put him on. November sharp tailed grouse taught him alot about honoring his nose. Most times they will not tolerate an extra step into the scent. My off season plans for him are to refine his handling skills on blind retrieves. I use him for waterfowl and blood trailing as well as upland. Right now his handling skills are still pretty raw. At this point he is still a work in progress. Three disciplines is a lot for a young dog to digest and not inhibit their hunt.

Smokey, sounds like your pup is on track and is doing great.

I have taught Judee blinds since she was 4 months old, I just want her to run straight lines to get her in the area so she can use her nose to figure out the rest. Some how she gets it and once she is down wind it's over.

I don't know how to post videos, if you will PM my your cell number I will send you a few videos of her running blinds, she does 300 yards easily in training.

Last week I sent her on a bird in Kansas that sailed off in a deep draw at about 140 yards away, well she did the rest.
