I just returned from a youth hunt at CBSP with my 9-year-old son. I spent a lot of time doing research before the hunt and thought I would share some info after returning.
1. Safety first - wear orange at all times and remind kids. I also put an orange fly over our pop up for extra identification purposes. Be sure to sign in and out. Make sure to use the safety appropriately and unload the gun as needed.
2. You can find trail maps online that will load into Google Earth. Search for open areas (which are limited) as this will help you find an appropriate hunting location.
3. Setup asap on the first day. Get the food out to start attracting animals (we used horse and mule feed - recommended by staff). Be sure to brush in your pop up blind so it doesn't stick out too much. We did our best and didn't get busted. We trimmed a lot of Juniper trees to help clear the lanes and used the trimmings. NOTE - if you can't find a good spot, ask staff for help asap.
4. Gear - we used Ameristep Caretaker with an orange fly for id and for rain protection. Caldwell SureShot is fantastic for youth to help stabilize the gun. Be sure to have branch cutters and gloves - juniper pokes a bit.
5. Keep your youth warm - I bought snow pants, ski coat, mittens, hand warmers, boots, etc. I even bought a small propane heater but decided it would be a bit iffy to use inside the tight pop-up.
6. Fun part - we saw pigs and deer. My son shot a very small doe, a spotted pig, and a larger doe. He fired (and likely hit) a huge buck, but after waiting 15 minutes, we spooked it and never saw it again. That was sad, but couldn't keep our spirits down. We did search for about 4 hours with no luck.
7. Know the difference between a pig and a javelina. They also have aoudad and Spanish goats. Our group killed a 175 pound Spanish goat.
8. The drive from the entrance to the river (cleaning station) takes about 20 minutes if you go the 20 mph speed limit.
9. Cell phone reception is sketchy. Higher elevation caught us one bar at our stand, which I appreciated.
10. Zone map and other photos attached.

Hope this helps someone else. The hunt was a fantastic experience for my son and me. The staff was exceptional. They answered several of my questions before the hunt. They really added to the whole experience.

If you happen to win a hunt at CBSP, be ready for a great time!
Let me know if you have questions. I'm so excited about the trip that I probably won't stop thinking about it for months.

How many groups per compartment?
What compartments were the best?

They have 5300 acres, split into 5 compartments. Each compartment gets 4 hunters I believe. From what I could tell you cannot get a bad spot. Animal sign all over the place. Some spots require more hiking in and out of the hunting spot. With all the gear, I was glad to hunt the north most edge of compartment 5. Easy access.

Me and my nephew were the other hunting party in this group. We had a blast! We saw Aoudads, Spanish Goats, Hogs, Deer, birds, armadillos, everything basically. We hunted in the most southern portion of the park (nearest to the water) and had a 30-45 min hike into our area (then another 30-45 min out). The hike was TRETUROUS with gear (especially with a 50lb bag of feed). In general, it was tough. I would not recommend this particular hunting area to older people/younger youth. I cannot express enough the physical demand required for this particular hunting spot (especially since we had to wake up early to be in our blind before sunrise).

Jake08's post is spot on. Staff was exceptional. Other hunters willing to help with our first ever cape was exceptional. Jake08 himself helped as well. I'm not sure what else to add to his post. He covered everything. I probably wont stop talking about it forever. SERIOUSLY!!! Pics to follow.

The second picture is a panoramic view from the ridge, near our blind. Not sure how to fix it. It was a beautiful park and fantastic experience.

We went last week and got 4 doe's. We had area 2. Only saw 1 Buck and he was a Shooter, very high and very large body. But he ran, glad he did cause we were on the main road and he was not in our area. Also got a Pic of a Buck at Camp.
Walked up on some kind of goats, but no shot they ran too.
Our pop up was hid so-so. first set of Doe saw us immediately, didnt run but knew we were there. We shot one. 20 minutes later, two more came out from another part of the opening. They too had heads high looking at us, but was able to kill one.
I moved to another spot the second afternoon, wind was 35mph gust and unable to stake pop up due to rocks. That sucked and no deer. But my son walked to another spot, sat on the ground. Killed one doe and missed another.
The last morning, I walked up to the first pop-up site and saw 3, killed another Doe. Luckily, we did have time to quickly age the first two, one 4 1/2, 98Lb live weight other 3 1/2, 90Lb live. The last two were 2 1/2, around 75 Lb. live, we were getting meat and made quick shots.

My advice; Corn at least three spots, ones u can walk up on to check them. The wind changed on us, so have spots you can hunt if it changes. I like to see alot of country and that is hard to find. The pop-up stakes suck. Get some good ones, its very rocky. I do believe they know a pop-up when they see one. You may just use camo net or branches and built a small fort like we did as kids, try to find a high spot, our miss was because of shooting through grass, my son was laying on the ground. The deer in the field sure aint like the ones in camp. They and exotics, are skidish and will see you. You will have only a short window to decide, we may have not seen some due to playing on the phone. We didn't get far from the road, but if you do, you will need one of those dolly things to bring a deer out, or corn in. NO cell service at camp. Had good service in area 1, 2 & 3, dont know about others.

Buchanan8492 - I enjoyed reading about your hunt! Congrats!
The wind really brought in a new dynamic. I can't imagine keeping a pop-up steady in strong winds. Even if the stakes hold it in place, I imagine it would make some noise - especially mine with a fly draped on top.
CBSP is swarming with deer and other creatures and I would love to go back one day.
Best regards,
Jake08
