Took the hunting buddy, fairly large, to the blind a couple weeks ago. Cranked it up, was running rough.

Went to stand today and decided to turn it on, not because it was that cold, but just to run it. Couldn't get it started in stand, took it to truck and it fired up. Ran on high, but was sucking air on low.......

Decided to bring it home and check it.

Took the back off and noticed a nest packed in there. It's a miracle it did not catch fire. Some wires chewed a bit, but not to bad.

Cleaned it out real good, patched up wires, ran alcohol in tubes and cleaned thoroughly. Runs like new now....

Bottom line, check stuff before you need it. Don't know if nest was made in my garage before the season or the last couple weeks sitting in the stand.....

Mine are both hung on the wall, in my blind or in my garage both..... for that reason.

Noticed the same on one of ours last weekend. I'll try to take it apart and get it working.

Mice and dirt dobbers will amaze you with their ability to find a place to bed in your tools and equipment.

Thanks for sharing the tip.

Took mine out of the box after being in the closet at the lake house. There were at least a dozen hornets in the bottom that must not have liked the heat and came out of the bottom. Fortunately they were severely groggy and just took a squish from the boot.

I had mice build a nest in mine and had a ball of fire when I tried to start it. Don’t know who was more scared, me or the dozen mice that came running out. Ended up buying a new one along with a case for it which keeps the mice out now.

Same thing happened on our camper heater. Went to fire up the furnace and in 5 minutes flames were shooting out of the exhaust port. Shut it down and shined a light in the intake - dang mice had somehow made a nest in there and not only was the nest catching fire but furnace wasn't venting so it was shooting flames outward.

Lost a 8000kw Champion gen to a dirt dobber nest in the carb, they came in the bottom of the air cleaner, factory should have put a screen on it and I should have left it at the lease.

Yes indeed. My Uncle had mud daubers go in the top exhaust ports of his outboard, When he tried cranking it up it fried his topend. I stuff mine with chore boy steel scrub pad.
