I recall someone on here posting about a recently built 6.5 PRC build and the last I read was it was out in the field. We were awaiting a range report to follow. Donít recall if it was Horizon or Alamo or someone else. Canít seem to find the thread about it. Anyone got any word on it or can point me in the right direction? Thanks

You might call and speak with Derrick. He and I were talking about the round. He is shooting it a good bit now and was very impressed with it.

Sounds good. I am very interested in it as well, especially since Hornady is making factory loads for it. Should be interesting to see who else is jumping on the wagon if you will at Shot Show. Rumor is Ruger and maybe a couple others are going to release stock rifles in this caliber. Thanks for the info.

I'm curious why Hornady decided to go all in on this one instead of the saum.

Don't quote me on this as I can't find the article I read back in September that answered your question exactly but I believe it was regarding "feeding issues" that GAP was experiencing (and since have resolved I believe). I am sure Derick or someone else on here will know. Not terribly much difference between the two.

Feeds with less work from internal mags and SAUM is a Remington design. Doubt they want to give any recognition to a competitor. Takes a good bit of work to get SAUMs to feed like they should. Should see how beat up 3 pieces of my brass are from getting the feeding just right. Thatís with a full custom so Iím sure some factory actions are even tougher. Lots of factory WSMs feed like crap

The PRC only gives up 50fps to avoid the headache

3100-3150 with 130s shouldnít be uncommon in most rifles. Some run fast and some slow though

I received the same info from Jason. I think Hornady is trying to keep it proprietary to just a few builders. This is stated on their website. Jason said this will be their first one. I came very close getting one too

It will be a big success

So here's the scoop with the PRC as of today. We got the first shipment of factory ammo several months ago and finally got our first reamer a couple weeks ago. Was super excited to get this thing going as we have been waiting about a year for the details to get sorted out and get going. Several of us had actually hoped to hunt with it this year:(

PT&G was the first to release their reamer and it included a .130 Free bore just as GAP had spec'd. It became apparent that this was going to be a problem as I compared it to the factory ammo and quickly realized the factory fodder would be jamming lands, and not just a little. No problem, had a "SAAMI" on the way from JGS anyway. Turns out that version is held to a .188 Freebore, which is too far the other direction if you want to touch lands and still run in a mag box.

If this is starting to sound a lot like the GAP 4s story, your'e right:) The good news is, this is all being addressed by folks with more skin in the game than me, and we have a custom reamer being rushed through that should be ideal for those of us that load, and those that want to shoot factory ammo in a chamber optimized for it. We can still run one of the other reamers if someone wants that chamber, and the .130 fb is not a bad choice at all if you roll your own.

For those contemplating a 6.5 PRC build with the intent of shooting factory ammo, you need to be aware of a couple things when choosing your components. If you are building off a 700 s/a or one of it's many clones and want to run a BDL type set-up, you will need a Wyatt's extended mag box. The Hornady stuff will NOT fit in a factory length mag. If you are planning on running DBM, the Alpha mags appear to be the best bet for now.

A little additional info. After Derrick at Horizon had his PRC for a week or so we were comparing his brass to my 6.5 x284 brass. There was only 1.0gr of H2O difference in case capacity so they are virtually the same.
Now the 6.5 SAUM has 5gr more than both.
I run the 135gr in the SAUM at 3120 which is a very moderate load and in the 6.5x284 same bullet is 3050fps with a moderate load.

I got similar results comparing the two. The PRC had 67.9 H20 and the 6.5-284 had 65.8 gr. Right at 2gr difference. Not much.

So we're in the same boat as the 6.5 Creedmoor, lots of free-bore.

And I just don't get why no one has given another option.

Based on what I saw in Grand Island last month there is lots of work still being done on the 6.5 PRC.

DStroud, I did not but there was something going on in the ballistics/bullet conference room they did not want me to see. I was standing nearby and on the projection screen there was a drawing of a cartridge I steeped toward the open door and promptly had the door closed in my face. I did not see enough to even make a guess at what it was but they clearly did not want me to see too much.

While in the lab I did not see any 22 Creedmoor stuff out in the open, but we did get to see the "Gun Room" which was impressive.

I've been following this cartridge from the start and wondered about these issues Robert has now confirmed. Personally, I think Shawn Carlock's .260 Terminator looks like a good alternative in a short action, though not factory supported. In a long action, the 6.5-284, 6.5X55mm Ackley Imp, and .264 Win Mag are still viable options.

Somehow I missed this post. I have been shooting one for some time now. We were listed on their website as one of the first and have had cases of ammo for a long time now. I have really enjoyed it I am shooting the 147s out of my 22 inch PRC faster than my 6.5 Creed at 28 inches. I have also shot 127 barnes ammo and a few other things, all been very forgiving. Been a great gun with a can. I have shot deer out to 635yards and aoudad at 310 and a bunch in between. I like that the recoil and cost is not much off the creed but the speed is there for a short sheep rifle. Only issue is it needs to be ran in an extended short mag or a medium action. With factory bottom metal it's only a 2 down and 1 in the chambered round but we just did special bottom metal just for the PRC to solve that. So far we are building up several for our dealer network so within a few weeks we will have them on the shelves in quantities.
