How is hunting west of town, deerwise and hunting pressure wise?

I hunt southwest of town and it is generally pretty good. Pressure is relevant to who you hunt with I’d say. There are a lot of gas and oil workers that come thru our property so the deer are use to it.Otherwise the deer, turkey, and pig population is really good and it’s only a 2hr and 15 min drive from Denton. up

We hunt about 4 miles inside the county from Young. Hunting has been real slow due to acorns and warm weather, really a weird year..........About 3 miles north of Woodson.

Shackleford Co. Has been slow this yr as far as age on deer. Plenty of young ones. In fact, overrun with basket young 8s and coyotes.

Yup I’m seeing the same thing. We’ve seen 2-3 mature deer since season started and that’s on two leases. Bunch of deer coming in, just all young. Hoping in a couple 2-3 years there big boys but who really knows. It’s been a fun season though, it’s fun seeing a bunch of deer

DQ, you know where my place is. We've had a pretty good year so far, & it's just starting good. 3 big 8pters & a 10pt. With a couple of culls also. Lotsa good lookin bucks for next year also. We've been seein some very good numbers.

& don't tell certain people (because they are idiots), but we've had some great aoudad this year. Some people here refuse to believe that, & think they know everything (while sitting on their 40 acres bellyaching), their handle has 2 letters & 1 number.

A buddy of mine leases a ranch north of Throckmorton, that butts up to my Quail lease. They’ve killed a 160 and one 145 this year. He told me a bow hunter wounded and never found a buck I’ver 175. They have 20K acres leased with only a few guys.

Sounds like some dream bucks right there! Would love to see a pic of those!

I have a place west of Woodson. This was our biggest deer this year. He’s still out there as far as I know. I’ve spent most of my time at my lease south of San Angelo.

Congrats to your daughter, stud of an 8 there pushing 150" I'd guess. How is the county for deer density, daytime vs nocturnal activity, etc.?

We estimated the 8 to score in the 130s. We don’t have a lot of pressure from neighbors so daytime activity is good. Deer density is not bad. It’s getting better with the last 3 years of good rain.

Good to hear, I think 140" is probably a better estimate on that 8, looks to be good mass throughout his frame, good beam and point length and a nice spread
Hope he slips up and gives you a shot.

1st year just a few miles north of town and buck numbers are good where we are. Not as many doe and quite a few hogs. The deer haven't been too nocturnal but mature deer sightings have been very infrequent. There seem to be a lot of up and coming bucks, maybe the drought has hurt what would be mature deer on this place or possibly the surrounding hunting pressure. There are a few nice mature deer on camera but not seen in person yet.
