Just picked up a Henry .357 lever action. It’s the steel version, not brass. 16” round barrel. I fully intend to hunt with it at sub 100 yard ranges, and would like to scope it. I want to buy new (hard time trusting used lower end optics). I also want it to look “right”. Thinking a short tube 1-4x20 or 32 or something along those lines. Sub $250. Not interested in “saving a little more” or stretching the budget. Thinking a Leupold may do the trick if I can find one in budget.

Leupold would work or the Burris MTAC. I have a old Leupold VX3 1-4 high polish on a very old Marlin 39A and it’s a fantastic setup. They compliment each other very well.

I know it may look a little different, but for under 100yards, I strongly consider a red dot. Something along the size of a Vortex Sparc or Sig Romeo

I think that a lot depends on how you want to use the rifle. For all around use, I think one of the 1-4x small objective scopes makes a great deal of sense. For short range use, I think the red dot makes a great deal of sense. That said, a Leupold 36mm 6x has a modest profile and will allow a little more precise shot placement, if you're willing to give up the wide field of the lower powered units.

Plenty of more than serviceable scopes also.

I'd go fixed 2.5x or 3x. You may take a shot at 100 yards or even further, but consider the size of the animal.

Earliest Weaver you can find. 4X or less.

Those old Weavers are hard to beat. A little on the heavy side for what they are, but no deal breaker IMO.

There aren’t any. There’s plenty that will work, but they all look out of place.

Unless you can find an old school scope like Blondie had. Then, it would look pretty cool, but only because of Clint Eastwood.

The good ol' days. My uncle and I would buy K4s and drive five miles down to the Weaver factory and have them set the parallax on them for 60 yards. We used em on 10-22s for slaughtering jackrabbits, and very effectively, at that.

The old El Paso Weavers were good scopes. I'm hearing good things about some of the newer upper end Weavers, too.

After some thinking, decided I’m worried less about how it looks. It can always be taken off later. Leaning towards an athalon 1-4

Leupold 1-4 Hog plex. Have 2 of them on a bolt 357 and a 44 mag and they work great.

I like El Paso weavers but not of a fan of the ones built before they had self centering cross hairs. So to say the earlier the better isn't accurate, at least in my opinion.

Hard to beat a 1-4 1" tube. I have a newer Weaver Classic extreme 1-4 30mm in Talley mounts on a Marlin 44mag lever, works well enough but it does a little chunky up top of the rifle. Thinking about switching to a leupold 1" tube.

Personally I'd pick a Leupold over the Athalon. Under your budget, backed by Leupolds warranty.

Good suggestions.

I am also in the camp of considering doing without a scope for that rifle. 100 yards is not that tough with open sights (might consider a ghost ring peep) and it sure makes the rifle more handy to carry/use. An added bonus is not having to worry about scope getting knocked off.

I should have added that I plan for my daughter to hunt with this rifle as well, she’s 5 now, but will be ready to hunt in a couple of years, and I think a scope would be best for that.

My wife struggles enough with a scope, her head would explode if I asked her to shoot iron sight. That said, start young, we all started with iron sights, I would try it out and see how she does.

When my kids were younger I started them deer hunting with a Winchester 94 in .44 mag. I put an old Redfield 1-4x scope on it and found a take off stock that shortened down for them. That Redfield worked very well and I don't think it looked too out of place on the lever action.

My cousin has the Marlin .44 lever action. His old eyes were having trouble with the sights so we put a small red dot on it. He's shot a deer, bobcat and a couple hogs with it and seems very happy.
