Hi everyone,
Before the last election, I picked up a stripped upper as a just-in-case purchase. Since I've got it, I figure that I might as well build it, so what's the best way to get started? I've picked up a video on the assembly process, and YouTube is filled with instruction, but I need the right tool set. Is the Wheeler's Ultra Armorer kit worth the money, or is it just a collection of "good enough" cheap junk? What tools should I buy to make this as easy as possible? Within reason, I'm a "buy once, cry once" kinda guy and from what I've seen, building ARs is like eating potato chips ...

I have a few Wheeler tools and they are good quality BUT if you are only building an upper you don't need all of that. You need a vice block for sure, depending on the hand guard you may need a strap wrench. I have used regular tools for the barrel nuts on free float hand guards (I always free float) and flash hiders.

I have the wheeler kit. The trigger guard installation tool sucks. Slips and is not the easiest to use but beats breaking a receiver ear off. The flat sided punches are awesome as well as the take down pin installation tool. The rest is just fluff... biggest thing to remember is to use painters tape on the side of the receiver to keep from scratching it during bolt release pin installation.
I wish stupidity was not so handsomly rewarded.
