I don't post a lot of reports on here and this isn't a true report, but I just had to share this.

I did a solo bay hunt this past Saturday and overall it wasn't great.

The first hour or so I was only seeing one or two big flocks(Redheads) way out over the open water no where near my spread. Honestly the wind wasn't exactly right for this spot but I was jonesing for a bay hunt.

About 8:30 a solo duck comes in and flares just at the edge of my spread, I got him on the second shot and it was a drake wigeon, only my second wigeon ever. If you recall my post from a week or two ago about where to target wigeon, you'll know that I haven't had the greatest luck targeting those birds. It was beautiful! I realize it isn't a great one but in comparison to my first, it was great! Lol.

Then at least another hour goes by before I see the next flock. It was another big flock of redheads on the horizon, somehow, I got them to turn using a wigeon call. (Used it on the wigeon as well) At first half of the flock broke off and turned to my spread, then the second wave of birds followed. The first half split again so at this point it was about 1/4 of the original flock. They cupped over my spread but then began to lift and I knew I'd been spotted, I decided to take the shot. Whiffed on the first shot then on the followup shot, I smoked 2 of them. The first one is the nicest Redhead I've ever gotten, the second was pretty good as well and maybe the 2nd best for me. So my slow hunt improved quickly with that flock. That was it for the day but it was a good day with only drakes taken!

Picture time. The redhead on the right is the good one! If I didn't already have 4 birds in the freezer, he'd have joined them. I'm already regretting not putting him in there. I just couldn't justify it. I've had one in there a couple years already and just can't afford it. Didn't see the sense in adding a fifth.

Nice one Brady! I don't know if I get another one like that if I'll be able to hold off like I did that one!

Blue wing is sweet!

I did have these Pins in the freezer. Still regretting I didn't get them done.

I had this GWT done the same time as the redhead.

My first duck several years back was a drake redhead. They are gorgeous as those 2 are. Still wished I had mounted that bird. Nice job

Congrats ! Those Pintail are pretty ducks too ! Hard to get close to them when I’m photographing at a local wildlife park . Only thing is there is no hunting at all permitted frown .

Nice birds. Sounds like we might need to double check our concealment.

Concealment was definitely the issue. I am aware of that. There just wasn't enough cover around. I cut down some brush and carried it out there with me but even that was subpar coverage. I left it there and will hopefully have a couple buddies with me next time so we can build up a little better cover.

Typically I just use it to access spots. This time however I did use it as a blind. I cover it up with 3 or 4 sheets of the camo fabric. Then use one to cover myself up. I also added some brush around the cockpit area on either side and behind the seat. Tried to breakup my profile but there really isn't the greatest cover out on this area.

It is a camo color pattern on the yak so that helps a little bit too.

You should keep the Redhead it’s a nice one and throw out the gadwall. Gadwalls are too common and to be honest that one isn’t that nice. Same on the widgeon. It’s not mount worthy unless you are mounting a memory over the looks. I learned that unless it’s a rare bird I hold them and continue to try for a better looking bird. After having 11 mounted and 3 still at birdman studios I don’t mind the wait.

Shot one last week and he will sit in the freezer for a while.

Sorry if I sound to harsh. Hope you don’t regret the redhead choice.

The Gadwall is already in the freezer, the wigeon got breasted out along with both Redheads.

Currently I have a Woodie, BWT, Pintail and the Gadwall already in the freezer.
