When you load the same powder charge of a certain powder over and over, you hate to switch lots of powder. It is inevitable that you run out of your old lot and have to switch to a new lot. I always wonder how it will effect the next batch of ammo in relation to the new lot of powder I have. I have been talking to the powder mfg's to get their ballistic data on each lot of new powder I get. Each powder, say like Varget, H4350 or Retumbo, has a control where the ideal powder burn rate would be. They provide me the + or - fps and psi of a certain lot I have.

For example, my latest lot # 5709 of Retumbo has a +5 fps and an even pressure to the control powder. This means that this lot of Retumbo has a perfect match to the burn rate of their control. So the burn rate is dead on. A few lot numbers ago, I had a -15 fps and a -1600 psi from the control. This means that this lot I have is burning slower than the control, so I may need to add a few tenths or so of powder to equal the control (or to know where the burn rate is on the previous lot I was using).

I have used this info to calculate where I need to be at with the powder charge when we switch powder lots. So far, it has worked perfectly with the 28 Nosler reloads I have been doing a lot of lately. I have gone through over 3400 rounds of 28 Nosler since late Sept, which is about 39 pounds of powder, just for the 28. It has taken the guess work out of how the new lot of powder will effect your reloaded ammo!

With your connections I am surprised you are not using IMR 8133 in the 28 Nolser.

Well, that's handy info to get from Hodgdon.

My main supplier does not have this in yet for me to play with yet. It's a brand new powder. I'd like to try it. But it will be hard to switch from Retumbo.

A little additional info on lot-to-lot differences: A year or two ago, I moved to a new lot of powder and found the velocities for one of my favorite loads to be significantly lower. I called Hodgdon to ask about the specific lot and learned a bit about their testing procedures. I can't find my notes right now, but I was surprised to learn that their tolerances are quite high. I think I recall that if velocities in their test loads are +/-50 or maybe even 100 fps, it was considered acceptable. Chad, you may know what that max velocity difference is.

The tech guy said they have a 3% swing either way for acceptable tolerances in the burn rate. I'm not sure how much 3% is, or to put a handle on 3%. I have seen the same velocity changes with some H4350 and Varget in the past. Enough change to make my normal load show pressure signs on the same prepped brass as my other safer loads were loaded on. That's why they give you +/- on the fps along with pressures. But the greatest change I have seen on their data was 20 fps. So, not exactly sure. I do believe there is a higher swing sometimes than what is listed. Having their data along with previous lot data really does help to calculate a difference from lot to lot without just loading the same powder charge blind.

Thanks, Chad. I'm not sure exactly what a 3% difference in burn rate means. Does it translate to a 3% difference in velocity and/or pressure? If so, at a nominal velocity of 3000 fps, that's a 90 fps difference.

That's interesting information....to get it that information can one of us peasants just call H and ask about the variance between two lots and they will tell us?

I wish I knew that, I once had a 6brx tuned to a lot of Varget that was a partial jug and thought I had enough to burn the barrel out. I was a few hundred rounds short so I cracked the seal on a new 8lb'er. I went through about 40 shells and never could get that gun to tune to that lot. I opened a different lot and was able to get it to tune in less than 20 rounds. It's the weirdest thing I've experienced because normally you can tune to the fps...I sure couldn't on that one.

To take it one step wilder...that lot that I couldn't tune, tuned up perfect in my next dasher barrel. WEIRD....I've had two shooting buddies tell me it wasn't possible. confused2

You can see lot to lot differences in reloading manuals that show the same powders sold under different names.

WIN760 is the same as H414,
WIN748 is BLC2,
H110 is WIN296,
HP-38 is WIN231

Same powders just different lots produce different ballistics.

One shot is all it should take.

Well, that's a badge of honor if you ask me. You've done the impossible.
