Does anyone here shoot a 6.5x284? I am thinking about giving my old savage 110 some new life and would like to add a bit more bite to my safe. I am looking for advise and pros and cons of this cartridge.

Thanks!

It's a great round. The main problem with loading for it is if it's on a short action or long action. If loaded to short action, it greatly reduces the bullet options and reduces the speed quite a bit (bullet seated deep into the case to fit in the short mag box). If you can load it as a long action and seat the heavier 140 grain bullets out long, it's a nice little hot rod. A 140 grain around 2900-2950 fps (3000 fps in some cases) with a full case of slow burning rifle powder will do the trick.

I have a long action .243 Win. that I will be working with. How hard is this round to load for? I am just beginning my research and I really like the 6.5mm bullets.

It's not hard at all. With the long action on the Savage, you should be around 2900-2950 with a stout load of slow burning powder. Seat the bullet long and work up to max.

I have a Nosler 48 Patriot in 6.5x284. It's becoming my go-to rifle. So far two shots, two bucks, both DRT. Chad loaded up some 120 grain Barnes TTSX for me and they are money both in terms of accuracy and game performance.

I have a brand new 6.5x284 that was a lefty Tikka 270 that Derrick at Horizon fancied up for me .....so far I have only shot the 147 ELD-X thru it but it likes them. Started with some H 4831 and also Reloder 26 which gets some good speeds.

I have been shooting one for about 10 years...have a Blaser R8 barrel and a Stiller TAC custom I had built...only have shot Berger 140s in it...but have killed a ton of game with a 6.5x284, I have to agree do it in a long action

My savage is not very picky, H4831SC and any bullet from 139 to 142 will shoot less than an inch at 300 yards all day long, it does like the bullets very long tho.

If you have a long action, why not go to 6.5-06, 6.5-06AI or 6.5-280?

I've got a Savage 110 long action with a .308 barrel and have been kicking around going back to a long action caliber.

I have 2 6.5x284s built one and bought the other a few weeks after the build.
Built a heavy sporter barrel Rem 721 (was 30-06) The start it was going to be a 6.5-06.
But the gunsmith talked me into 6.5-284. (ballistic twins)
Then bought a Mauser action with a 22" lite sporter barrel.
Ironically they like the same load of 4831SC and 140gr Game Kings!

I have a Cooper in that and it's an absolute hammer in the accuracy dept. The 26" bbl is a bit slower than I want but it works, to me its a trade off.

For speed I built a 6.5 Gibbs back in the early 90's, it drives 140's well above what I expected.
