Elmer keith hit a mule deer buck twice at 600 yards with a .44 mag?

Story goes he shot at a rifle wounded buck 6 times at 600 yards with a model 29 in .44 mag. Missed first 4 then got him with the other two.

I call b.s on it for multiple reasons, the very least of which you cannot even begin to aim at a deer with a pistol at 600 yards with even a smidge of accuracy.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It is hard to believe, but it’s certainly possible, even more so for a pistol shooter of his caliber.

I figure the most likely thing is that he hit it as claimed, and at a distance, but maybe not quite 600 yards.

No I'm bored.

Got kicked out of my house for the evening while the wife has the women's group from church over.

Like maybe 200?

I would take that bet all day long. Connecting at a 30% clip at 600yds with a pistol.?!..

I don’t believe in the tooth fairy either.

I'd doubt it, highly doubt actually

About the same likelyhood as all the mountain lion sightings

If Jerry Miculek can use a S&W 9mm revolver to hit steel at 1000yd, then I'd say anything is possible. confused2 popcorn

I don’t doubt that he did. I know I can. I also know that without an act of God it would probably take about 25,000 rounds to do it. The key is in how many shots. 2 out of six is a ridiculous statement.

1 out of 6 is possible, so for somebody like him yes.

Gotcha

Yeah it seemed suspect to me to

I shot a buddies glock 45 at a basketball sized rock once around 100 yards. It broke the rock in half.

It was almost impossible to aim at the rock at 100 yards, extrapolate that by 6 and I'm not buying it, even at deer size game

Hell, with a 3x9 scope most guys would have trouble hitting the deer with a rifle of standard velocity

600 yards with a 44 mag pistol? I’ll take that bet. 2 out of 6. Name the amount I’ll cover it..

Check it out here. He’s 1 for 2, if Elmer Kieth is anything like Jerry Miculek, then I’d say it’s possible. Not probable, but definitely possible. Possibly even plausible!

For the drop involved, he'd be aiming at the Little Dipper.

It's a fairy tale

And how any times did he practice it before putting it on video?

For all we know it was his 500th shot of the day

Ok I read the article.

If you believe that, you’d have to believe he “tracked it in” on the first 4 shots by following the “snow splashes”.

At 600 yards a 44 magnum round would make about 3 snowflakes wiggle. You would then have to believe that he could bare eye see those 3 snowflakes wiggle.

It was a nice promotion for S&Ws new model 29. Again, anyone believing that has the cognitive reasoning skills of a 4 yr old.

There is almost a zero percent chance he could even see the animal at 600 w the naked eye and iron sights

I'm 37 and still have 20/20 vision.

I am pretty sure I couldn't see that animal, he77 I know I couldn't.

There is a difference in just being able to see the spot and lining up irons and seeing it too.
