My buddy shot a nice 11 point with a 15" spread.

What other buck can he shoot now.......legally.

Its a two buck county with restrictions, I just want to see if I'm reading the reg correctly.

spike or buck that has a horn on one side that is un-branched. So, that could be a three point, if on one side he was a spike

A buck with at least one unbranched antler.
It can have any number of points on one side as long as the other side is unbranched.

That would be a question to ask your local game warder before you pulled the trigger.

The game warden here told me if a main beam is broken and not branched, it's a spike. The only exception would be if there is evidence the hunter broke it off intentionally. I think it would be consistent, but it's possible that a GW in another county may interpret the law differently.

I don't like that. Basically shooting a buck the "shouldn't" be legal to shoot. I don't think I'd knowingly do it. Getting my second buck on a technicality or loop hole just doesn't seem right to me.

The regulations say zero about an antler that is broken off. If it is unbranched then you are good to go. The law is written that way since it is a little unrealistic for someone to judge at 200 yrds if a spike is truly a spike or if they broke their horn off right as the sun comes up. This isn't up to the GW for interpretation. I agree that you might not want to knowingly shoot a buck if he just broke off but it is legal.

That isn't the reason the law is written that way.
So, it is unreasonable to use binoculars or otherwise accurately identify and be sure of your target before you pull the trigger. You just sling lead at a deer without knowing if it is legal or not.

A spike buck deer has always been defined as a buck with no antler having more than 1 point.
A true spike is easy to identify, both antlers slick/2point or 1 antler slick and no other antler visible.

Tpwd dropped the term spike from the AR regulations over a year ago.
Buck with an inside spread of at least 13" or buck with at least one unbranched antler.

Just me, I wouldn't shoot a broke off buck I knew was a 12 point before being broke off just to fill a tag.
Chances are he'll grow it back next year maybe even improve a little.

As far as legality goes, you can always email a question to the proper dept of TPWD and get an accurate answer.

That isn't what I said but ok. I have a great pair of binoculars but at distance it can still be difficult to judge if a horn was broken off or not. Another related question then, why is a point defined as 1 in or more? You should be able to see a nubbing buck with a half inch antler as well but that is tagged as antlerless deer. Why shouldn't you be required to tag it as an antlered deer?

A point is defined as - A projection that extends at least one inch from the edge of a main beam or another tine. The tip of a main beam is also a point.

Using your example of nubbin with 1/2" tall antlers.

Considering the 1/2" antlers do not meet the definition of a point and the only tag options you have is buck or antlerless, I guess you could tag it with either.
It is a buck that does not meet the requirements of having a ' point(s) ' 1" or more.

Again TPWD is very good with answering questions if you want an accurate answer straight from the source.
