Looking to add to my knife collection a good hunting knife with gut hook. I have seen a few online, Benchmade, Buck and Gerber. Looking for any personal recommendations. Looking for something that holds a edge and can be used primarily for deer/hog dressing.

I don't make many gut hook knives but I have made a couple.

Very nice work. Not sure I am ready for a custom knife at this time. Christmas has taken a hit to my budget. Will definitely keep you in mind for future knife purchases.

I have an older Gerber; I have used the gut hook a lot but don't use it for anything else.

Yeah currently looking at a Gerber and Benchmade. The benchmade seems to hold an edge longer than the gerber. Gerber is more than half the price.

The Benchmade or Mike's are prbly twice the knife the Gerber is. It is fine for its gut hook though.

Yeah, thinking the Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner is the best value. Good design and holds a blade. Plus lifetime warranty and free sharpening for life. I have a Benchmade pocketknife that I am really impressed with.

Not a fan of a gut hook but here's a thought. I also carry a utility knife with roofing blades installed in it. I like a drop point on my knife and the roofing blades make excellent gut hooks and can be easily changed or replaced.

Yeah I have heard of others carrying a small pocket knife with a gut hook in addition to their regular skinning knife. Maybe the way to go. Now if I can only convince my wife to get me the Saddle Mountain for Christmas...

used this gut hook only Saturday , worked great. at the price they can be one time use and not worry about re-sharpening .

Price is certainly right. I have heard that sharpening gut hooks is a bit more difficult than the blade on a knife. I assume you have to use a small round file.

For that price I'd just throw it away and buy another.....my worksharp will sharpen them.

I have a gut hook (I think it's a Gerber) that uses razor blades, held in place by a set screw. No need to resharpen, just toss the razor blade and replace with another when it gets dull.

I've got an OLD, OLD, Old Timer gut hook skinner that I've used for about 30 Yrs. now. I've never sharpened the gut hook and it works fine. I use it to skin and then I use my Buck 119 to quarter.

I have a Buck Alpha that I have skinned elk, deer, squirrel, rabbit, and turkeys with. My Warthog sharpener came with 2 or 3 small round diamond hones for serrated knives that work just fine for sharpening the gut hook.

I have a Benchmade Grizzly Creek that has the gut hook hidden in the handle. I've used it on 6 deer and 4 hogs this deer season and I have sharpened it 3 times is all. The hidden gut hook allows me to carry it daily as well. I highly recommend this knife.

I think the proper name is roofing blades for cutting asphalt singles. When they get dull either turn them around or just replace, I think they cost about five dollars at HD, I've been very pleased, especially with hogs.
