Went out to LSA private shooting range with the owner of Lonestar Armory to test some guns they are making. For the first outing with the 12.5” was quite fun. We tried several different makes of factory ammo. Here are some of the pics I took. It looks like you lose about 50 FPS for every inch cut off the barrel.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to do some long range shooting today. We were busy testing different rifle builds. I’ll share some of the conex towers they have to shoot from. They offer private instruction and will be hosting several long range matches. I think the next one is in March

That looks like pretty respectable velocity for a 12.5"er. I bet she is LOUD without a suppressor. I'm considering a 16" or 18" 6.5 CM as my next project.

Very interesting. Are you running an adjustable gas block? With a really short barrel, you are losing most of your pressure at 12.5", which doesn't allow the bullet to get up to speed. Generally you will lose about 20-25 fps per inch with normal lengths (20"24"). When you go much shorter, the bullet doesn't have the pressure behind it. I'm showing at 12.5" barrel, the exit pressure is 22K psi. Normal exit pressure in a 22" is about 11K to 12K psi. So, there's a lot of pressure lost with a 12.5" barrel with typical 6.5 CM powders. If you went to a faster burning powder like Varget or 8208, I'm showing about a 100 fps gain with a 140 grain in a 12.5" barrel. If you want more speed, that may help.

I have thought the same thing about a 16-18" 6 or 6.5cm. Put it in a manners ehf1 and you got a handy little truck gun/ trunk monkey.

Are you going to pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?

I believe there was an adjustable gas block on that build. He is testing several different things with a 308, 6 Creed and 6.5 Creed. I’ll pass the info along. The group posted was my hand loads for my 22” Creed gas gun. With those loads, my 22” Creed gas gun gets around 2600 FPS. The same loads in the 16” Creed gas gun were 2400 FPS and the 12.5” was 2200 FPS . That was 33 FPS different from 22” to 16” and 50 FPS from 16” to 12.5” approx.

What is that charge weight for Varget using 143 ELDX bullets?

That's only about 50 to 100fps more than I have seen reported from a Grendel with a 140gr bullet but it is a bit more efficient with less of a faster burning powder. Not as much hot gas for the can to catch either.

Like Chad said a faster powder should get you more velocity from that short barrel

The gun cycled fine. But I know of others toying with that SBR that did have issues.
