Trying to decide between the Stratus and the Incinerator. I am thinking if i layer correctly all i will really need in south Texas is the Stratus. Anyone have experience with either?

I have the Jetstream, and it would serve me well in south texas for sure, layered appropriately for the weather. I would be comfortable in the Jetstream by itself down to the low 50's, with a thermal shirt probably into the low 40's and with a thermal shirt and another layer into the 30's...sitting in a blind can make that even more comfortable than sitting in a tree stand/tripod.

Given the way temps rise so quickly in the south, I would be inclined to buy less insulation and more layers, that way you can de-layer as the day goes on and keep the outer layer on. And if you plan to do any moving around (I know, South texas doesn't lend itself to that kind of hunting, but maybe...)then less insulation will be your friend.

When I hunted down there near freer, it wasn't uncommon to have temps in the mid-high 30's in the AM reach low 70's by afternoon...it isn't like the panhandle where it goes from teens to 30's.

Thanks for the info and will look into that jacket.

You hit the nail on the head about the weather. Unless i big front is coming through usually around 30 in the mornings and around 50-60 by noon where we are in Val Verde County.

Nice thing about the Jetstream is it is considered a wind jacket with water resistance (enough to keep you dry in a south texas mist or light rain for sure), so breezes don't get through it well at all, and it has pit zippers so you can vent if you are too hot. Also, the hood can make things more bearable in the cooler weather. Overall a nice jacket.

I do not own the stratus or incinerator jackets though, so I can not compare.

I ended up going to Gordy and Son in Houston and they had both to try on. I ended up with the Stratus as i wanted something a little heavier. II might get that jacket next year for the start of the season as it would be perfect for it. If anyone has not been to that store you need to go it is awesome. Everything is the best of the best hunting clothes and equipment.

Yeah i hope so. It is crazy how thin all the jackets are but everyone swears it will keep you warmer than one of the big fluffy coats.

Sitka is designed to be a layering system though, so make sure you have layers if the weather is cold enough. But you should be good with that jacket.

Honestly, looking at the two, the difference between the stratus and the Jetstream isn't much. A little extra fleece perhaps, and a soft shell exterior rather than a DWR exterior on the Jetstream, but they are very similar in design and weight. One is designed for closer whitetail hunting and one is designed for big game hunting. SO not a huge difference. You should be good to go with the stratus.

So i love my stratus jacket and now looking at the vests. Anyone have options on the stratus vs fanatic vests?

Obviously the Stratus vest will be the exact same material as your jacket. Compared to the Fanatic it is a lighter weight material Gore Windstopper. The Stratus is a traditional vest. It does have an elastic waist draw string which I don't believe the Fanatic has but I am not certain on that. The main difference is that the Fanatic has a "primaloft layer" sandwiched into the Gore Windstopper with a long thread berber fleece exterior. The Fanatic will therefore have more loft and provide more warmth than the Stratus will. As shown, it has the diagonal zipper to allow for a marsupial pocket on the front of the vest.

I think it depends on your intended use. Added warmth/layering - I would go with the Fanatic. If its something to be worn when its not quite cool enough for the stratus jacket, I would go with the Stratus vest. Just my .02.

Ended up with the stratus vest as it just fit better under may jacket and did not really like the horizontal zipper if it was not all the way zipped up. I figure i cna add more base layer if i need the extra warmth.

I’m about to gear up on Sitka. Love the gear. Needed it recently while stall hunting hogs. Weather was cold (20s) but because I was working so hard crawling and climbing for 4 miles, I soaked with sweat through everything. Fortunately I was headed back home, but if I had been far out, could have had trouble. The layering system works great so you can hike in with minimal gear, then put on more layers if you stop.
