My oldest son has been asking me to hunt with him on a ranch that his friend owns near George West Texas for a few years now. This past weekend we went down and I had an absolute ball. I’ve never seen so many deer and turkey. I had a flock of twenty walk within 15 feet of my stand. In 3 Days I saw about a hundred Turkeys, 3 coyotes, a bobcat, and probably 50 deer. The biggest bucks I saw were wide rack six pointers, so I passed, but I did take a Management deer Sunday evening. Old dad still has a good shooting eye. One shot at about 140 yards with the .270 Browning Stainless Steel Stalker right in the vitals. It ran about 20 yards and collapsed in a heap. A great time was had by the four of us hunting, and my son and I had some really good father/son time on the way down and back.

Don’t hunt your friend.

That’s all I have to say about that.

Sounds like some guy ran off with someone's woman down to South Texas border town and someones after him. Entire movie could be written on that Thread title.

Then don't give him the antler hat to wear.

South Texas is like a different world when you hunt in the northern half of the state. I enjoyed watching all the quail and different birds almost as much as the deer.

Look for the "Green Jays" a really cool and beautiful bird you won't see in north, or central Texas. They have a high pitched raspy call. The bird has a blue crest, light to yellow green brest fading to a darker green to grey on the back and some white in the tail and wing tips when they fly.
It's a tropical bird that largely inhabits South America and it looks the part.
I read that their northern range was only up to the valley, but they have moved further north close to San Antonio.
It's not unusual to see anywhere from three to four flocks of turkeys, and these flocks can be anywhere from 50 to 60 birds per flock.
I've got to the point where I curse them because they eat all the corn I threw out for the deer, and my nickname for them is feathered vacuum cleaners.
South Texas is going to keep you on alert most of the day that you can sit and observe. There are ton's of animals and birds, and the brush comes alive as the sun rises. Once you hunt there, you won't care to hunt anywhere else.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

We are firm believers in flavored Baitcorn brand corn to supplement the feeder corn. What we have found is that the deer down there really love the Red Apple flavor. The beauty of it is that the turkeys don’t care for it. Put the regular inexpensive corn in the feeders and spread the Baitcorn around the feeder. Since the feeder is only set for 3 seconds, the turkeys get some, but they leave plenty of the Baitcorn Red Apple for the deer.
