It seems the dry weather has created a very negative impact of our season in East Texas. According to a local weather report I heard just yesterday, we're over 2 inches behind on rainfall for the month of November alone. The lack of rain has caused the acorns to last much longer since wet acorns spoil and turn bitter more quickly, and our food plots have very little moisture to grow. Add to it the warmer days and nights and the deer just don't have very much pushing them to move about.

Yup. Basically bow hunting in the summer this October!! Between the natural browse and weather it has been a very slow season as far as feeder activity. Not uncommon to have a day or 2 of feedings on the ground. I typically will throw out corn between my stand and 2 feeders. This has helped at least stop them as they travel and has made the hunting at least bearable this gun season.

Saw on the weather that much of N Texas is back in the drought conditions and it's creeping South. Dry enough I have planted oats twice this fall and looks like a bust for the most part.
BTW, Most of the acorns around here are near gone, had 10 turkeys looking around my truck and shop yesterday grabbing what the deer and squirrels have missed.

With the exception of one feeder on our lease I haven't noticed much of a difference. Our tanks are looking pretty ugly but other than that the deer are hitting the feeders every day still.

East Texas hunting has been I cant spell it. Phonomenal. I hate a wet deer season. I walk alot and my feet stay dry and the swamps stay down. Easy to navigate. It actually should result in forced feeding areas versus green everywhere. And track covered shallow drinking holes to keep your spirit high. Buy a pump and irragate your food plot. Carry tanks of water to the plot. Or just hunt real simple. Deer are simple creatures. I carried 100 pounds of white oak acorns that I swept up from a wal mart parking lot to my moms place. The deer eat them every evening. Threw them in the pasture. No feeders.

We got real lucky in Bosque County and had some timely small rains. Our food plots came in real good. And after having a bumper crop of acorns last year, we have almost none this year. Our ponds and lake could use a good hard rain though.

Yeah it has been a rough year for us on my buddies private property where we hunt. The deer basically disappeared for awhile and have been eating the acorns non stop since there hasn’t been much rain. It has been too warm out too. We haven’t even got anything in the freezer yet. Seen some nice size Doe’s during bow season but passed them up. Had a huge buck cruise by but he was running by pretty darn fast and I didn’t have enough time to get a good shot at him. Things are slowly getting better finally and I hope to get a buck this sunday. I am running out of time before I go in for a corrective back surgery in the middle of December. My dogs look forward to eating Deer meat with me through the year so I have to get one!!!!

If we do not get some rain in Mills county soon, they animals are going to be in real trouble. Ponds are dry and springs aren't running. No forbs to speak of. Deer are already hammering the corn and acorns are gone.

I posted before that dry years are my favorite years. They hit the protein and water troughs on my place and there is less hog activity to drive the deer off.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Acorns are bitter to begin with. Ive seen more than one deer go around a corn feeder and hand thrown corn to eat soured corn/milo from a hog trap or hog bait. I don't believe acorns are any different. For me a dry year has bee a good year hunting, wet years are harder on us.

Been terrible in bandera county.
Lots of acorns and corn sitting under feeders
Seen maybe a 10th of the deer we normally see
Been the same on a lot of places
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Deer can only eat so many acorns. They have to eat some green too. Stomach ache. The deer actually come out of the timber in east Tx. to get grass in the evenings.
