My Stag 6.8SPC has recently develop an intermittent "double tap" issue, and I'm looking for hints on where to start on fixing it. Build is about 8 years old, but has had less than 500 rounds through it. When I originally put this one together I had a reduced power spring installed and the trigger sear polished. (has a nice 4.5lb pull with little creep) I've cleaned the gun thoroughly twice since it started happening, and no improvement. Where's the next place to look?

The trigger. If the trigger has been tuned too light or some screws/pins have come loose, it can cause this. I've had AR trigger issues recently. One was the trigger itself (replaced), and then some pins were loose causing a 2-3 round burst.

Just don't let the ATF guys see it happening. They have no sense of humor about that stuff.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

A velocity drop in trigger will fix it. The problem is the disconnector is releasing a hair too soon. If you want a cheap fix, just replace the disconnector.

You might be accidentally bump firing it. I’ve had it happen with light single stage triggers.

Suppressed? My 6.5 grendel had this problem installed slr gas block and it went away. I also chalked it up to not holding the trigger firmly back until the bolt cycle had completed.

This won't apply to your situation. My 6.5 did that once while hunting. Double shot on a racoon under the feeder. I thought it was weird so I took the gun apart. The buffer weights had blown out the front of the buffer and hit the back of the firing pin causing the 2nd shot. Cheap rifle buffer I guess. Took a couple of pics and sent them to a buddy in another stand. About that time a big pig comes walking out. Couldn't shoot with a broken rifle. I snuck out of the stand a walked back to grab a different rifle out of the truck. Pig was gone by the time I returned.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I really like the trigger... but guess it's the most logical place to start. Guess I'll drop in a Timney or Geissele and see if that cures it.

Buddy had the exact same thing happen. One of the pins was sticking out some. stuck it back in and tightened the set screws on his Timney and never a problem since.
Before you drop $150-200 on a new trigger do you have a milspec you can drop in and try? If it shoots fine with it then you know what the problem is. I might even have one you can try if don't have one.

Had a brand new drop in that did that. I guess is was machined wrong. Manufacturer told me to check the trigger reset, it failed the test and they overnighted me a replacement immediately.
Check trigger reset: Set safety selector to FIRE. Dry fire weapon and keep trigger held back. Pull charging handle all the way back and release, letting the bolt carrier snap forward. The hammer should not fall. Release trigger. Hammer should be caught by the trigger.

You might be accidentally bump firing it. I’ve had it happen with light single stage triggers. +1 Also, try a heavier spring before completely changing the trigger group. .
