This year me and my 9 year old son are starting to duck hunt. We went to Granger last week didn't see anything but a few coot. We have some mallard decoys and I have a jon boat that we are using to hunt out of. was looking for any info that will help us learn more and get a shot opportunity on some ducks. We just started hunting deer and hogs a few years ago. would getting a guide for a trip help with the learning curve?

Thank you for any info.

JJ Maldonado

A guide is an excellent way to learn. I highly recommend going on a couple different guided hunts.

scout morning prior to a hunt, make sure ducks don't get busted out of the spot, be the first there next morning, hide the boat and completely conceal yourselves, don't call...... do that and you will be in the top 5% of public duck hunters

Welcome JJ, awesome that you're getting into it. Fair warning, you're going to be hooked.

I would definitely suggest a guide. Go out with them, pay attention to how they operate (decoy set up, when they call and when they lay off) and ask a ton of questions.

Most great guides will be more than willing to share info and insights — never really met a duck hunter who doesn't love to talk, and I mean that in a good way.

Not sure where you're located but Jeff at Silver Creek Guide Service outside of Fort Worth is a walking encyclopedia — one hunt with him and you'll feel far more sure-footed than you do now.

Best of luck this season and for the many to follow.

Im located in Austin, work in Salado. Any guides in Central Tx area? or within 2 hrs? My work schedule doesn't always let me take the drive to Dallas.

You don't want to come near Dallas anyway if you're trying to learn "how to do it right" smile

Hide as well as you think you can, and then put more brush on to hide better. If you choose to call, watch what the ducks do when you blow your call, if they pitch towards you or slow their wingbeat they probably like it so keep doing it. If they ignore you or gain altitude, stop, and don't do that again. When you're out hunting or scouting, watch where ducks in your area go, they go there for a reason. Find that spot and hunt it if possible. Duck hunting is pretty situational, so you won't learn much about public marsh hunting if you get a guide trip over a private tank that birds already pour into. Maybe still worth doing if you want, but i'd either get a guide trip on a body of water similar to what you'll hunt or just save your money, that's just my opinion. Good luck and have fun

Don't call was a great point. Make sure there is motion on the water, either a Jerk Rid or a rambler. Glass water will almost never see ducks.
