So, I have a 308 T3X CTR I am looking at building out. I got the Mountain Tactical AI compatible bottom metal and their rail in today and installed. Works great.
McMillan is working on some new options for Tikka and I am getting a Game Hunter Edge Carbon sent, hopefully in a few weeks.
First thought was to chop the 308 down to 16 but I don't need another 308. For bolt guns have a custom 6.5, 7mm08 17" and my dad's early 60s Sako 22-250 I haven't had the heart to take out of the safe yet. All my other bolt guns were sold off the last few years.
I was thinking a 243 so I can have more of a varmint gun but the 6mm Creedmoor has my attention of course.
I will most likely never shoot it unsuppressed and hate ultra long barrels. So, thinking of a Hardy carbon 18-20" barrel. My buddy has one of their 24" on his RPR and it's a hammer.

I think you are correct in all points.
Pick your bullet, and make sure to get the correct twist. Of course I like heavy high BC in everything, so that's what I would put in a 6 Creedmoor as well.

yep..
With a smaller bore diameter I don't think you can get away as short as a 7mm08 or 308
We will see how it goes

Yup will loose more velocity and without the can muzzle blast would be very loud. In a short barrel the 6X47 Lapua might make more sense if not for brass.

I'm thinking my next bolt gun will be a 6CM.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

My 6 creed had a 22" barrel and was great. Fun little round.

had? why did you get rid of it? I still have it but it needs a new tube sitting at 1800rds right now. I'll likely go 22 or 24 next go around. 3k with a 105 is all I ever aspired out of it and it did that with ease. Only complaint I've ever had with it was the utter lack of consistency in Hornady brass. This was pre samii brass but it was still headstamped and made at Hornady. Next barrel will get lapua brass.

I'm thinking you'll be cooking the chit out of your can w/ that flame thrower and she will be sloooooow but I love the cartridge, 95-115gr destroy all 6creed solves so may issues the 243 has, don't hesitate to go that route

I haven't made a hard decision one way or the other.. I don't have time to shoot my 6.5 long range much

I think that was a wise decision. It is nice not to have to have ammunition for a bunch of different calibers.

If you don't own a 6.5, I'd trip it for a Tikka 20" CTR, just me. Less recoil and plenty performance for my needs. Little cost out of pocket....better bore life than a 6mm CM. I do love the 6BRs, but its a custom affair, and not always easy to set up for good feeding if that's desired.
Agree on K.I.S.S. with ammo..

I would suggest you have a talk with Josh at Patriot Valley Arms. He has a stellar reputation in the accuracy and quality control departments. And he is doing some really cool stuff with user-replaceable pre-fit barrels. Great prices, and down the road you don’t have to worry about the down time and cost associated with having a smith set your headspace for you.

CC - A 6CM in a 20" would be efficient and effective, loss of MV would be offset with quick twist and high bc.
