So... how many of you go to the ranch and find yourself doing the cooking and not hunting near as much as you thought? heh I admit, I like sleeping in and getting the coffee all to myself because everyone has left (I cannot take much to the stand as it makes me need to pee.. lol). I love being able to WATCH them clean the deer, vs having to do it myself... :P I like cooking, vs cleaning, although I do tend to do both. I think the next weekend, I have a guy coming in from Kansas that has been trying to make it down for years and when he heard I was going, decided to make it and then Mike and Pitch are coming down. Mike and Pitchfork always bring good steaks. Chad, the guy from Kansas, owns a cattle ranch and is bringing a couple prime ribeye steaks. I have farm fresh eggs and quail eggs, so breakfast will be nice. That leaves lunches and we will see what we can grab for that... may be fresh venison! :P With all that food, who has time for hunting!? (although.. would not mind getting a nice Axis) R
Hunting is easy..it's getting permission from your wife that is tough.

We just make sandwiches and snacks the night before and take it all to the blind so we don't need to leave.

My uncle and his friends own a bunch of miles of land up in the old logging area in Maine and built a cabin to stay in while they hunt. The last couple of years, he has tagged out within 2 days so he spends the rest of the week fixing up stuff, processing their deer for them and cooking a lot. Also drinking since he is done hunting for the trip. We are Italian so he likes to cook too. One of his friends is an old retired General who just likes to come up for the comradery so he usually sits up against a tree, reads a book, writes down his memoirs, has a cigar and if a deer walks within distance, he picks up his gun and shoots it. I find it funny that the old salty guy does absolutely nothing to find a deer while up there, smokes a big ole cigar and still gets a nice size deer on every trip up there. Where they are, deer have never ever even seen a human.
I was told by my buddy 15 years ago to buy a big 4,000 acre plot of land up there while the land was selling for dirt cheap money, but I never did and now the land is worth a lot more. There is some great fishing in the small lakes and ponds up there and in the winter, you have to use a snowmobile to get in to most places and it’s totally worth the effort. I love cooking and use my smoker a lot. I hunt on my buddies land where he lives but once I move up to his area, I will be doing a lot of cooking so we can have some big meals at night during hunting season. The guys at your camp are lucky to have someone that wants to cook. Have a great season and I hope you fill some tags!

When more than one of us is here we seem to take turns. We are pretty primitive though, just campfire and grill cooking. I'm by myself a lot so it's all up to me, I like at least one hot meal a day.
Girlfriend is with me on this trip so I cooked ribeye last night and just threw some ribs on the smoker.

I usually do the cooking, and the rest are responsible for the cleaning up the mess I make.

Dad is responsible for cooking breakfast, I'm responsible for grilling the steaks on Saturday night, my brother is responsible for driving to, and more importantly back from, the Mexican place in town. It works out.
Far as cleaning, that's what the nieces and nephew are for.

I like to hunt but I don’t care to sit in a deer blind. I do all of the cooking and my fair share of the camp whiskey drinking. I don’t care if I ever kill another deer. I’d rather let one of the boys kill mine for me.

I'm on a lease and I do 99% of all cooking, cleanup etc.....I haven't shot a deer in 5yrs. My grandson is in charge of the trigger pulling but that may be changing. I may have to pull on a couple deer this year. Grandson is 16yo and girls have temporarily taken over his interest. Ha! I knew that was coming

I hunt hard, most of the day so there's only time for one hot meal per day. That one meal is always a great dinner when there's plenty of time to do it right. It's all out door with a wood stove, gas burner and a grill in a covered area. Steaks, stew (cooked at home, frozen and bagged), shrimp, great burgers, always fresh green vegetables, cedar plank salmon and beverages of choice. I cook and freeze breakfast taco's and sausage/egg/egg cheese biscuits at home to take. One first thing in the morning, another in a zip lock bag in my pack. Set it in the sun to heat up, pretty tasty.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I don’t cook or clean my deer anymore. I just shoot them. I have child slave labor for that stuff.

I'll cook over cleaning any day. I know what kind of mess I make, and My wife reminds me often. We usually cook outside on grill at evening. Thats our big meal, and light stuff for breakfast/lunch.

In our big trips out west, myself and one other does the cooking. Our rules, if you cook, you don't clean and if you clean, you don't cook. About a month out, we start cooking our soup, chili, beans, and stew bases and then freeze them. We then use them as ice on our trip to the hunting area. After a couple days they are usually thawed out and easy to fix if we get in late from hunting.

I cook at home, I enjoy weekend trips to the ranch when my mom takes over the cooking duties for the most part unless we grill something. I do try to help with the dishes though. We stick to 2 meals a day, breakfast after the morning hunt and lunch/dinner around 2:30-3 and if your hungry you can munch on something after the evening hunt. If I ate 3 squares I wouldn't be able to walk to the blind.

Cooking and cleaning deer can both be handled the same way - softly, and with just the right amount of uncertainty, say "Now let's see if I remember how to do this,". Bada- bing, the type A personality in the group handles everything. But, that guy on my lease won't wash a dish. Not 1. Ever. 'Guess that's fair. Irritating, but fair.

Guess I'm the type A guy. I like to cook, I like to hunt, and I like it done my way. Usually have meals planned for the whole weekend before I head out. Depending on who is going and how long we are out I will usually email a list of groceries we need and everybody pitches in. Don't really like other people messing with my chuck wagon or handling the cooking. I keep it exactly how I want it. Unless you are a kid, then you are more than welcome and encouraged to learn the right way to do chit. Keep telling the kids I hunt with. Soon as I get you suckers trained to kill and clean on your own I'm retiring to camp chef and head whiskey taster...
