Pen raised chukar game real fast and r more difficult to rAise than flight trained Bob's. Why do u want chukar? There is really no advantage over quail.

Dog won't catch a pen raised chukar. Pen raised quail would be my last choice

I concur. Whoa break the pup first or use a CC. The last one I put through the breaking process was steady after 9 flushes.

That hasn't been my experience--I used to raise chukar. They get tame real fast. By the way, why would u put a dog in a position where they can catch the bird? You should be flushing the bird before the dog gets that close.

Well articulated. When will they ever learn?

I raise chukers and they aren't that hard to raise. But when working a young dog i never set them up to fail. I always used a launcher controlled by a remote. But I use pigeons in launchers and when they wind the bird if they don't go on point I release the bird.

Well they r harder than quail because they need to be on wire a lot of places or they have parasite problems. A lot of people want to see their dog on point and don't understand an easy way to get a dog to start pointing is to put him in a situation where he learns if he crowds the bird and doesn't point the bird will escape.

Pen raised quail when launched in a remote launcher don't fly with a hoot. Many just fall right back down to the ground. And others may fly 20 feet before they land. Seen this tru multiple different breeders

My experience with Chukars is they are on the whole 2x wilder than a pen raised bobwhite, so maybe its how they were raised, how much daylight contact they got etc.

A buddy turned me on to the "tipup" bird releasers and have a couple of orange ones, man those are easier than the spring based ones and dont make a pup flinch, easier to carry, and seems like when you tip it up and you are right beside the quail, they are freaked out and get up and go pretty good.

Here's a thread I with pictures started several years ago. I kept a Johnny house for several years. Photobucket removed the pictures. It's the best I can do.

All bird dogs point. The breaking process teaches them to hold point. There are two ways to teach a dog to hold point, with dozens of variations. The first way is to let the birds train the pups. That generally involves launchers and pigeons, with some whoa breaking mixed in. It's very effective. I use the Delmar Smith method, substituting the e-collar for the bump under the chin. My dogs are completely whoa broke before I put them on birds. I use pen raised quail, because I can be done with them for the summer. I like to start in August, and finish in time for hunting season.

I start off on the whoa post. I introduce the e-collar the same day, that I introduce the whoa post. Here's cracker on her first day with the whoa post;

I keep them on the whoa post only until I can get out in front of them, and then go to the yard for heel and whoa. Cracker tended to sit, so I had to start with the suitcase hitch. I go from the yard to longer walks. The pup has pretty well gotten it down after three weeks.

I then go from the walks to whoa in the field. Here's Cracker in the field in the field, before I put her on birds. This whole process has taken me around four weeks.

This is her first day on birds. I train alone, so I had to plant the bird, where I could wrap the CC around a bush. Notice the slack CC.

I kept her on the CC for three training days. She only went around on the bird one time. Here she is after 9 training flushes.

I started walking some of the birds out after a few days. Here you go;

A little side note. My birds were not recalling all that well, so I used Cookie to point them while I netted them;

I don't remember a pup ever catching a pen raised quail.

I'd use chucker over quail hands down every time. The worst is when the grass is thick. Quail try to burrow down into the grass where chucker may hold tight which is fine with me. When you get close they get up. When they do get up. They really get a dogs attention cause they go straight up and then out. The dogs always see them and know what's going on. It's much cleaner then a weak flying bird that flys out low. Young dogs might not even know they flew out of there is low cover.

That will get you going but eventually nothing but wild birds will do.
