Ok, I drive past this every two weeks and curiosity got the better of me. What are they building or doing with all the dirt work going on the south side of the road at Ranger Hill?

I was told that is going to be the new road.....in short, they are lessening the grade and taking out the curve as you go up/down the hill.

Went to Weatherford and back on Thanksgiving and saw all that and figured that's what was going on. There have been numerous wrecks on Ranger Hill over the years and it is always a dangerous place. We were in the curve part of the hill going east and a yahoo in a new GMC pickup passed us doing at least 80 and he nearly hit the concrete divider trying to make the curve. Several years ago a big ice storm hit all up and down I-20 from the metromess nearly out to Odessa. A lot of I-20 and Ranger Hill in particular was shut down for several days IIRC as it was simply impassable.

Yup.

Ranger Hill will not be as formidable as it once was.

Saw a heck of a wreck back in 1987 coming back from a deer hunt. Heading east down the hill a VW beetle hits a orange construction barrier barrel and does a 180 and lands on its roof, they slide down the hill for about a 100 yards and I mean it was the vehicle right in front of me nuts

In January years ago, one cold early morning about 5 am, Got about halfway down heading into Ft. Worth in my bus taking it to Prevost for service and didn't realize with the jake brakes on easing down about 20 mph that I was sideways. 42,000 pounds and nothing I could do about it. Thank goodness I was the only one coming down that morning. Whoa buddy!

I drove a loaded air force fuel truck up it once. At one point I didn't think it would make it. Less than 5 mph at the top.

Very true. I used to try & get a 3-4 mile running start when I was driving a big rig out that way. I would usually have to drop 3-4 gears before I could make it to the top weighing 80,000 lbs.
