Back in April this year, Dad and I found out we lost the lease we have hunted in South Texas for the last 20 years. After our initial shock, we decided to use our lease savings on a Mule Deer trip. After a lot of research, I decided on an outfitter in the Peace River region of Alberta, Canada. We sent in our deposits and got excited for a trip together to a place we had never been.

We arrived in Alberta to 5* F temperatures. It was cold, but would only get colder.

We spent the first 2 days acclimating ourselves to the cold, and scouting some bucks. We saw several deer, but no sure shooters. One buck was a shooter if his G2 wasn't busted off. Others had great frames, but only 3x4, and some had great character but were too young.

Day 3, Dad saw one he liked, and put down this cool buck with a couple extra tines.

Day 4, another hunter in camp shot this heavy old buck.

Finally, on the evening of Day 5 (with temperatures of -13* F), we got a call from my dad and another guide that there was a good buck we needed to come check out. We hustled over there, and they were texting pictures the whole way. Judging only from the pictures, I could see it was a decent buck, especially for the 2nd to last day.

When we arrived, we looked the buck over, and decided to go after him. We got to within 350 yards in the tree line, and set up for the shot. One of his does I think saw us, and was coming up to inspect us. Good news, is he was staying right on her tail. I kept waiting for him to turn broadside, but when they got to 130 yards I was done waiting. It was a hard quartering shot, but I placed the bullet just inside his front shoulder, dropping him immediately. As I walked up to is buck, he kept growing. He was WAY better than any of us had guessed. The 300+ pound bodies on these things fooled my judgement on antlers.

It was a great trip with my dad, and I can't wait to do it again.

cheers it's been a great year for sure, sir. The New Mexico elk and Alberta mule deer are my only hunts for this season. If I attempted an encore, I'd have to sell something for the taxidermy bill that's headed my way.
