Completely new to hog hunting, haven't even bought the gun yet. I'm leaning towards an AR, .300 blackout or .308 most likely, but let's assume I choose either of those two calibers: I'd be willing to spend about 1k for optics, etc. but I don't want to go much more than that. With that budget, am I better getting a motion detected light under the feeder or can I get an entry level night vision scope that I won't hate myself for buying?

Other option I've been thinking about is to not buy an AR and simply use my .270 deer hunting rifle (bolt action) with some sort of scope attachment with night vision or something. Current scope on this gun doesn't have cross hairs that light up but love the current scope for deer hunting. I don't care about shooting multiple hogs at once, I'm really interested in the fun and meat.

I'd be shooting hogs, coyotes, or raccoons from a stand at about 75 yards. I'd also setup a feeder most likely. Only reason I'm leaning the AR route is that it would give me the option to get something started now, and slowly upgrade over time (if I feel the need). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You can get digital nv in that price. Works pretty damn well . Sightmark photon and a little extra light goes a long way for your money. I would NOT spend MY money on ATN. But some people have, and they are happy with them . Not sure if there any recoil ratings on digital nv. But I’d look into it and be sure . Hope this helps

Would a light under the feeder be a good supplement to that setup?

I've used a Sightmark for years now, with no problems switching to multiple rifles along the way. A cheap light near the feeder will give you a heads up for when the hogs arrive. You can set the whole thing up for about 700.00 or so and you're in the hog business.

The Ar is a great hunting platform ,the 300 black out sounds like
A great match for what you are looking to do
Shoots easy, kills them real good, versatile and sounds great supressed
The sight mark photon is the best entry level scope for 500.00
Or so , then you can buy a suppressor for about 640.00 from silencer shop
( gen tech tracker 440.00 stamp 200.00 ) and change everything makes hunting even better
When your gun is suppressed

The facts are you can do what you want with a good red spotlight and your 270. Even better a scope mounted red light ( I have used the green lights but prefer the red ones). The suppressed AR topped with a thermal scope gives you an edge as it is possible to get more than one shot at hogs before they are gone. That said I have a Photon XT mounted on one of my rifles and it is just fine for what you want to do though it requires a fine focus and changing yardage much means you have to be on top of focusing the optic but for watching bait piles or feeders at night it works perfectly. Your crosshairs don't have to light up just be visible in front of the lit up area. Thicker is better.

I have a 300 BLK and also an AR-10 in .308.

For shooting in an open field, making shots on running hogs, I use the AR-10. If you think you may be someday taking longer shots or trying to take out (fast) moving targets, this is the better route.
For shooting over a feeder at less than 100 yards, which sounds like what you're planning, the 300 BLK is okay. It's lighter than the AR-10 and has somewhat less recoil, although I don't take so many shots that recoil becomes an issue.

Either will work, the AR-10 being more powerful can fill more options. But if you're pretty sure you'll just be shooting at a feeder or bait site, the 300 BLK is fine. Heck, you can always get both (like I did)!

I never said I was smart, but I am having a good time …

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical 300 Blackout. This is a heavy 16 1/2" threaded 5/8 x 24 barrel with Pulsar Digisight N750. I bought both new about 2 years ago and killed many pigs with it. I paid $1400 for the scope and $700 for the rifle. Both are functioning perfectly and probably has less than 100 rounds through it. I also have a few hundred round of 300 blackout in both subsonic and supersonic. The ammo is probably $400. All for $1500, Firm. Text me for pics since I never post pics before at (214) 236-3846. Face to Face only somewhere in Arlington, TX. I have upgraded to AR-10 with Thermal scope which is why I am selling.

This is my 300wsm I use for night hunting. Orion Predator H30 red led light with a clip on mount.
Works great. I do use a handheld FLIR for spotting to make the stalk.
