I think I got the wrong bi pod. I have been shooting off the L model which has legs of 9-13 inches. I find that at the 9 inch position it is too high and I'm sticking bags under the buttstock. I'm looking to get the R model with 6-9 inch legs but am unaware of the draw backs to that length. What are using and why?

Yes, I run the 6-9 Harris swivel bipod. I have the one also that is non-swivel, and which it were swivel. The Atlas bipods are also nice. More expensive, but work very well also. I have one of those on my TRG 42.

I use the 6-9" legs, only ones I've used all other seem way too tall for me. Closer to the ground I am the better.

6 - 9 swivel (S-BRM model) and spend the extra $14 and get the extended handle to really tighten up the swivel mechanism.

Be careful if buying online. I recently made a mistake and didn't notice there is a NOTCHED leg version and one that doesn't have notches. I want the notched but got the continuous/friction one instead.

You're not alone, I have the taller Harris and it's awkward at best. 6-9 is better. I'll add a second vote for ponying up the extra funds and investing in an Atlas if it's possible. It can be shuffled around to different rifles in a matter of seconds. And I've found that is it a much more versatile solution for a wider variety of shooting situations. And adding a short rail section to a fiberglass stock isn't hard. It's worth the initial efforts.

The Atlas is more versatile, no doubt. I use it on my competition 6.5 Creedmoor, and my LR308. But during load development, zeroing, and getting DOPE on a rilfe, I feel more stable on a Harris. The Atlas, at its shortest length is a little taller than I'd like, and there is a little bit of play in the notches on the hinge.

Maybe I should keep the tall one and get the shorter one until I grow into the tall one. The button on these pants is telling me it's a good idea.

You mean I should turn my back to the beer and Mexican food? I could maybe do without the beer but I'm not sure I can make it on rabbit food. That's why Harris has the taller bipod in the first place.

I usually tilt the legs forward 45* to go lower depending on the rifle. However, I sometimes wonder if I am doing weird things to my POI with it in that position. I haven’t noticed any major issues yet luckily.

I have both, and use both. Some situations one works better, some situations the other. For flat ground or shooting off a bench with most of my rifles the shorter 6"-9" version works the best. It is also better if you are shooting right over the crest of a hill and need minimal height on the front of the rifle. However I do have a couple rifles that sit on the rear bag a little different where the 9"-13" works a little better. And for sure if/when you run into situations where the ground is sloping down away from you or if the grass is kind of tall the extra height becomes very important.

If I know I am not going to need the extra height the shorter one is generally more comfortable to me. But if I am going out in the field where I really don't know what situation I am going to run into then I carry the 9"-13" model. If I need something short I can always fold the legs up on it and use it that way, laid across the top of my pack (or not) to adjust height.

For sure the notched leg version is the one to get no matter which height you prefer.

I've tried that. It seemed like the bipod got sloppy to me. Maybe mine is getting worn out.

I guess yall are talking about for target shooting from a bench or prone??? I have the tallest one that I use for hunting when sitting on the ground and find it to be to short when hunting ridges and valleys. Flat ground its fine. I think its the 27" model.

I got the non-swivel version and it's been fine. I assume the swivel is a bit more versatile and just as well made.

Caldwells will fail. I had to borrow Chad's harris when mine failed at my the first hunters challenge. It was not a swivel unit. I like my swivel and pod loc I have now.
