sounds like a great plan... longest shot I can make at my lease is only 300 yards... I took my 16 in 6.5x55 out to 800 at your place(with your skills)

My CTR with Omega and anchor brake is 51". Not real handy but I still like it. If you want short and don't care about velocity, go as short as possible. 16.5-17" or so. If your can has a QD adapter, you could go shorter and pin that if you wanted.

Mine is 16.25". Even with a 8" can on it, it's handy.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I hunt with 120 A-max at 2715fps, and have dropped many animals with it. Furthest kill was a 200lb hog a tad over 400 yards, dropped him.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

When cutting them down it doesn't hurt to have that extra .25 inch on the barrel like TexFlip did, makes sure if a LEO ever wanted to measure it no doubt it is legal

Sounds like you have made up your rifle already, but I'll put in my two cents worth anyway.
I look at it this way. Going from a 24" barrel to a 16" barrel you will lose roughly 200 fps in most high power rifle calibers. That's about what the bullet loses going from the muzzle to 100 yards. So you lose 100 yards of effective range. Another way to look at it is the difference between a .30-06 and a .308 is about 150 fps. Not a whole lot different than your barrel chop. Would you be concerned that a .30-06 would kill the pigs and a .308 wouldn't? No you wouldn't, pigs not going to know the difference until you get way way out there, and then your ability to dope the wind and place the shot will make a lot more difference.
If the longest shot you can take on your lease is 300 yards that shouldn't be a problem because the 6.5, with the right bullets, is still very effective way past 400 yards with the longer barrel. Now if you really want to be stretching the rifles legs and do some 1,000 yard shooting yeah that extra velocity will matter. But if you have a place to shoot 1,000 yards you probably won't need the handiness of a 16" barrel.

My local shooting range is only 300 yards as well. So if I wanted to shoot longer I would have to travel. If I do get to travel and take game at long range I always have my suppressed 338lm to take with me. I just think a short bolt gun would be very handy and actually my barrel comes back today and I can chrono it this weekend with my magneto! will keep yall posted trying few types of different factory ammo Prime ammo 130gr Hornady 140 eld Hornady 129 sst Once I get this rifle squared away on to cutting my 22-250 to 18-20 in and testing it!

I have a friend that is building some 6.5 Creed 12.5” SBRs. Waiting to see some range reports. Might end up being a good “short” range blind gun with a can. Time will tell.

Not to nitpick, but this is some bad math. You give up way more than 100 yards of effective range, because at the point where you're transitioning from supersonic to transonic to subsonic, you're losing velocity much slower than you are in the first 100 yards out of the muzzle. Bottom line: 200 fps costs you a lot more than 100 yards of effective range.

Sig226fan is doing a write up on .308 sometime.
We started at 26 inches and cut it down 2 inches at a time (threading and testing) , its now 16.
I think he was surprised at how little was lost cutting it down, don't quote me on that though.

I'm curious to hear the results on this. Spoke with my buddy this morning. Might be shooting some of his test rifles on Monday. He has a 11” Creed already done that shoots less than 3/4 MOA at 100. Maybe the 12.5” ones will be done by Monday?
