I've owned several pairs of Merrell shoes and boots over the years. Mostly for street use and light outdoor use. They've all been very good but now I'm looking at a pair of Merrell hikers for hunting. The model is called "Phaserbound".

Any of you guys ever wear Merrells to hunt?

I'm not a fan of the of the grips on the soles of most of the hunting boots.

Merril makes great boots for home use. I'd try Lowa perfect hunters or Danner Sharptails for hard hunting use.

I grew out of my Perfect hunters so I went to Sharptails
I have big legs and the lace ups almost don't work cause they jab into my foot where they crease in my back step. Good socks solved the problem and these boots are really tough. We walked stubble for days and they held up well. They are comfy and really tough boots.

My brother has good things to say about the new orvis kangaroo leather boots. They fixed the sizing problem.

I agree about the lug soles on most boots, I'm not a big fan either.
I currently have a pair of Danner Pronghorn and a pair of Irish Setter Wingshooters.

The Danners have better support than the Wingshooters but the Wingshooters are all leather, therefore much better around cactus.
I've developed a slight foot issue on my left foot so I'm thinking the Merrells would give me the support and they are all leather.
I also know they are lightweight. - the soles are not too aggressive:

I have these too. (Browning Kangaroo) but I need to have them re soled(sp).

Won a pair of Irish Setters (cant remember what model) on a Facebook contest and they are good but not what the Brownings are / were. I wish they still made them.

I have some Russell prickly pears. They are a little pricey, but they are awesome boots!

Can you compare the Russel boots to a more common platform? Say a Danner Sharptail? Or maybe a LOWA Uplander which is good for me?

No, I really don't know much about the other brands. They seem popular, and have good reviews, but I have no experience with them. I can't imagine a pair of off the shelf boots could compare with a pair of custom fit, custom made boots.

Being quite new to the hunting game, I can only say so much. But for hiking, backpacking, you need the best fitting boot for your foot to keep your ankle sturdy(gotta love the boy scouts). I went to REI and tried quite a few boots, and for my foot (skinny and long.....) the Merrell boot was the absolute best, literally fit like a glove. My father has the same exact boots, they fit our foot style the best. All depends on your foot!!

I have a pair of all leather Vasque hikers that I bought in about 1978.
You wouldn't believe how they've held up.
Remarkable product.

I hunt in hunt the Merrell calf high hikers. I have a Mortons Neuroma in my left foot. It feels like I'm walking on half a ping pong ball. Some kind of genetic thing. Anyway, those boots are about the only thing I can wear all day without complaining. Of course if the birds are flying I don't think too much about my feet.

I have owed a few pair of Merrels but I'll never own another pair. Last 2 pair were too thin on the sole. Could feel every rock I stepped on. I wear Danners mostly and really like them, thicker sole and better arch support.

I have that Morton's Neuroma thing going too. It's new to me. (getting old is a.....)

I wore Danner Pronghorns to pheasant hunt. The sole is solid and my feet held up all day. Cactus is a problem with these boots but I guess I'll stick with them at least until my foot heals.

I use the mid height Keen and really like them. Merrell makes a good boot. I think you'll be happy with them.
