Have shot stragler coyotes, but never actively hunted them.
I'm on a mission, my place is covered with coyotes, they killed and ate a friendly timid homeless dog I fed.
Place has open areas and thick area and creek down middle.
Do I use a caller? Battery operated? Put caller by tree line? Does wind matter with coyote?
Only at night or dusk, or dawn? Mid day......
Gonna use my 6.8, shot placement? Neck, chest?

where to start? wind IS a major factor, you need a good field of view, if brushy use a shotgun, starting out get a e-caller, I like to use mouth calls with my caller, any time of day, some like early, personally I have shot just as many during the day, night time calling gets good results.
hold on Newt, we got a runaway

How much do you want to spend? Where is your place?
Foxpro makes great callers and you pay more for more features. Mouth calls work well and a lot of times better than electronic.
Like colt said wind is the biggest factor. They can outsmell just about any other animal. If they get down wind of you it's over. Try to setup in cover, wind in your face, sun at your back, and predict which way you think they will come from. They will run trails like deer and everything else which will help determine likely spots they will come out of. I like daytime as well as nighttime but with the broomweed this year it helps at night to hunt because you can catch eyes.
Shot placement is like every other animal. In the vitals, head, neck, whatever. They aren't big so a 6.8 will knock them down.

It all depends. I have a Primos Alpha Dogg on sale I got online at Rogers sporting goods for under 200$. I love the call. Another question is are you hunting in the thick areas or in the open areas? I have tried to hunt them in the fields but never had any luck. I’m in the east Texas piney woods and have had a lot of success hunting in the woods out of a tree stand. I have shot a few in the evening but I have shot more from 11 to around 2 in the afternoon. It does help if you have a moving decoy of some sort. Especially if you are in a tree, because it takes the focus off of you and puts it on that decoy

Used to have good luck with the standard wounded rabbit call a few years back up by Paris. But I repeatedly hear that they are very wary of that call these days and will avoid it.
Does anyone throw out raw meat as bait?
When in doubt, take the .45-70

All the calls, camo, calibers, land, and coyotes in the world don’t mean a thing if the wind is wrong. Ive called coyotes up and killed them in blue jeans, Ive killed them with .22s, Ive killed them on 10,000 acres and on 1 acre but I have never killed one that got my wind and remember your scent is blowing into places you can’t see and as you walk to the spot so don’t walk passed a good brushy draw giving it your wind to get to a clearing he will know you’re there.

The wind and be very still. They have excellent vision and will turn tail in a flash if something looks/moves suspicious. The spinning decoys help there. Or just a feather on a string. Hand calls are the funnest when they come right up in your lap. Watch the crows and magpies, they will follow and heckle the yotes looking for a meal.
One shot is all it should take.

I have a question on the wind. Do scent masking sprays even work? I’m pretty new at this as well. Are we talking no deodorant, shower the day you are hunting?

Drug sniffing dogs have noses almost as good as coyotes and they can smell cocain sealed in plastic bags hidden in filled gasoline tanks. But I would still recommend a shower anyway ......but don’t waste your money on masking scents.

I like to set up on a cross wind. Face the area you think they will come from but position yourself so your scent will blow into an ope area. If they are going to wind you they will have to be exposed and get shot at. ALWAYs bring a shot gun...it can happen fast so the shot gun is nice. As soon as I spot one I quite calling. Bark or squeak to stop them...if you have an e caller call after you shoot. You might be surprised how they come running back some times. On my foxpro I do a female Yote challage bark. Man that death on them. They usually die if they give me a second chance.

On all the tv shows they setup on the edge of a field. Maybe its just for filming purposes. I setup 5-10 feet inside the cover as long as it doesn't obstruct my vision. Ill place the caller and decoy in the field 50-100 feet away. They appear out of nowhere and fast at times don't start calling until your loaded and ready. If they are hunted in your area talk to those guys and find a different sound. Kidd Goat in distress works well for me not many around here have it.
