I have a older M77 (was my dads) in a 270 that I shot my first deer with 30 years ago, I want to rebarrel it and go with a different cartidge. I've never re-barreled a ruger before or dealt much with one except this one. Is it worth rebarreling.

Probably is, but be prepared to spend coin if you can't do it yourself.

What chambering have you in mind?

Barrel = $350
Gunsmith = $350

=Worth it (if you really like the rifle)

What do you want it to become?

That's still up in the air as far as what I'm going to chamber it in, which barrel, and stock. Not looking to make it a 20lb'er or barrel burner. I've got a buddy that is an excellent smith, I'm going to have him do it at a brother in law rate I just have to pay for parts and beer. Actually have no idea what to chamber it in yet but it wont be a .270, its going to be a deer/pig gun.

Nah, something smaller with less recoil. 6.5x284 or something similar.

That is a good cartridge and works best in the longer action such as your Ruger so bullets can be seated longer. Work with your smith on how far you want the lands to be out.

Have you ever shot a 6.5-284? recoil is not that much less than a 270 if you are riding it hard. I do enjoy shooting my 6.5-284 and if going somewhere I want longer ranges than I will shoot the Grendels or my old 7mm-08 the 6.5284 gets to go hunting.

I already have one. That's why I haven't came up with a cartidge yet, my smith will more than likely talk me into something thats a PITA to load, meaning brass prep.

6-284 is an option with a twist rate for the heavy 6mm bullets. Less recoil for sure with the lighter bullets and enough horse power to push them fast. Could also go that route and load lower pressure for longer case life and still get 243+ speed.

Just throwing out ideas.

I built a 6mx284 many moons ago on a M77 short action. The rifle was a hammer and long before it's time. I havent even sen that thing in years as it sits way back in a safe nowadays. This was before the fast twists were popular. It did shoot Barnes original flat base 75gr X bullets into a bughole at just over 380fps if I remember correctly.

I think 6-284 is a very good choice.

Not sure why you would do this to a rifle with so much history but it's your rifle. I would keep the rifle as is and build another or just by another. My Fathers rifles will remain the same as the last time he hunted with them. As much as I like Ruger rifles that's certainly not the action I would build off of, there are much better actions.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

25/06 is the perfect Texas deer/hog cartridge. smile

Or if you’re wanting a 6mm, a 6mm/06 would give you the same ballistics as the 6/284
With probably smoother feeding and cheap easy to find brass.

25/06 is great for Texas but it gets no love on the forums because the 6.5 bullets have much better BCs. I think I would keep the cheap brass and go 6.5-06 or 280 Remington. You would pick up a ton of bullet options.

That's a fact.

A plain ol' .280 is no slouch either. It's no longer difficult to get 3000 fps with a 150 in the SAAMI chamber, but it's also true you'll get that much more out of the AI version. Just a question of whether you want to expend a little extra effort for the AI. The .280 is different enough to achieve a bit of cool, and the AI does a bit more in all respects.

I forgot to mention the advantage of a longer action with 6-284...you can seat the heavier bullets way out there for more case capacity and get even more out of it. My 6-284 is like that, and I seat 95-grain Partitions out to an OAL of 2.92 inches. I load it pretty warm with H4831 and get about 3250 out of it. When it's time to make more ammo I plan to try Re26, and I think I'll get even more out of it. Just because I CAN!

You are aware a fella can buy .280 A.I. brass right? You don't have to buy .280 brass and fire form it if you don't want to.

What he said. Leave it alone and buy another one.

Of course I'm aware of that. But if I'm not mistaken, you pay more for brass pre-formed because you have to buy it from the premium sources. I believe dies cost more too, and loading data for the AI is not as plentiful.

A guy who really wants to do the AI won't be stopped, it's just a matter of deciding that's what you want to do. The plainjane .280 gots no flies on it.

I don't think the 280 in either form will have less recoil.

I would do a 6mm-06 or 6mm-284 with a barrel having twist rate to handle the heavy 6mm bullets. But that is just me and my thoughts.

The 270 is as good as any of the mentioned cartridges! With the newer powders, especially RL 26 you can get 3000fps with the 150 grain bullets and over 3200fps with the 130's. Then there are a couple of 110 grain controlled expanding bullets you can push to a good bit past 3300fps. Does the barrel you have shoot well? The 270 is still a hotshot cartridge, and a new limbsaver recoil pad will make a lot of difference compared to the hard red pads. But if I were going to rebarrel anyway I would make it into a light 257 Roberts.
