I went deer hunting at our deer/quail lease in West Tx way up the north of Dickens between Turkey and Lakeview. I was so busy dove hunting I never got my deer hunting set up so I worked out there one whole day. I saw 7 coveys one evening and 5 in a different location that next morning. All is not lost they still exist.

The coveys had 12 to 20 birds each. I didn't see any young birds like I did last year. It sure was good to see birds though. I felt better after that.

Greatness.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

I went opening day, around Petersburg. I saw 9 covey's, 4 of them were very young birds. I didn't hunt very hard, so was pleased with what I saw.

Thanks for the reports! Looks like we will finally get out west Thanksgiving week and I am ready. Been running the dogs every day on gravel getting their feet ready. Seems like every morning they get more excited. They know it's time to go.

Y'all go check out Texas rolling plains quail research areas report from their helicopter survey today on Facebook. Lloyd LaCoste called me and said we still have 2/3 of the birds we had last year and his ranch was very dry. I don't think everyone is seeing all the birds that are really out there due to poor scenting conditions and other factors that are common during early season. It's still going to be a good year, if we can do 15 to 25 coveys a day I'm not complaining, we're all spoilt to the 25 to 40 a day days.

Yup we hunted public land on the opener and did good I thought. 9 coveys that first day. I'm not sure but last year we pushed 14 I think.

Both days we didn't hunt super hard cause it got hot and the dogs were showing it.

I hope to get out again soon...life's been tough lately and I don't even dare to try to plan a hunt yet.

Great soaking rains out west today. Scenting should be better for a while.

We saw many quail in Webb county. There were gambels quail and bobwhite. Didn't shoot any because they were in the road eating corn.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Moved 8 to 10 conveys per day in Throckmorton County. Hunted approx 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon over 2 1/2 days last week. Saw older and younger birds in conveys. Convey size ranged from 10 to 15 birds.

2 seasons ago we were loaded with quail, rabbits, and rats/mice and had very few coyotes at our lease in Fisher County.

Last year it seemed the coyote population exploded and we saw very few rabbits, quail, or rats.

We used to walk the lease with .22s at night and shoot rabbits and rats. We only shot 3-4 rabbits a trip for a couple meals.

Went last year several times and we never saw a rabbit or a rat. Walked 160 acres and flushed 1 lone quail, never saw a covey.

Previous year we shot about 75 quail only shooting 8-10 birds per hunt and didnt even put a dent in what was out there.

Headed out tomorrow night can’t stand the cooler weather and not be hunting. The dogs, kids, grandpa, and I are all ready to go.

Went out for 3 hours Wed. Saw 6 covey's, most of them small in number.
