So I was out this morning trying to find some ducks for the opener. I found birds but they were all rafted out in open water. Even the shovelers were out in the middle. What does one do if he knows where the birds are, but doesn't know how to hunt them? I don't have the right stuff to hunt in deep water.

Are they divers out there feeding? Are they late morning birds that fed and came there to loaf?

I jumped them going to check my hole at daylight, and jumped them again around 9:30 coming back. same birds same area. There are some divers but a lot of them are not divers.

Get out there before daylight and just anchor a ways out from where they are rafting, somewhere you won't cause a disturbance. Identify where they are coming from. See if you can find a consistent flight pattern/path. I'd bet they are mostly coming from a similar area along a similar flight path. Trace back up the flight path they are coming down and find a huntable location. I like to call this "shortstopping" them. When birds are going to a location where they aren't huntable this is what I do. By setting up along the flight path and before where they are headed you can at least get them to give you a look and a chance to work them. I've had some great hunts by doing this, especially later in the season.

Is your spot holding birds?
Do you have a #2, #3 alternate spots?
If those birds are in a boat channel or area of high boat traffic, they're gonna get their world rocked sat. morning anyway, after the war begins lol.
Things will change sat. Be prepared to scout after y'all shoot em up.

Good luck Noah. Be safe out there. Post up some picks for those of us that can not be out there.

If you find them in the middle of the lake, JMO, I would move on and keep looking. Its a positive sign you found some birds, but you want to find their feeding ground. They will go back to their feeding spot, but they will not go back to the middle of the lake lofting spot, plus no cover in the middle of the lake.
