I have remington VTR 308. It has leupold 3x9x40 on it. It's a decent scope but was was wanting to upgrade. Looking at the Nikon p308 4x12x42. Would that be a good option? Or should I upgrade to something a little better. I'll rarely shoot to over 500 yds. I'm not super scope savy but really want to upgrade. I'm underscoped! What would yall go with. Probably upgrade base and rigs too. I'd like to stay around 700 in the setup. Any ideas. I don't think I'm smart enough to use the scopes with all the adjustments! Lol. Maybe though. Any help or advice would be great. I just want to see a little better. Little more magnification. I think at least the gun deserves it. A little back story, I bought this gun off a guy on a hunt I was on. He shot an animal and was 400 bucks short so I bought it for 400! Lol. It's served me well but really want to upgrade my optics. Seams silly to have that gun with a 3x9 on it.

It has leupold rings but seem real light duty. Don't get me wrong I've shot lots animals with this gun and Dom at 300 plus. I can hit steal 500! Lol. But that's come from lots of shooting and learning my hold over. Lol. The bases suck too. Two piece not exactly what you would call good. I'm thinking one piece base and good rings are a must. Don't laugh at the 500 yd comment. We were sitting in rifles one day and after the 3rd shot I new where to hold over. Could barely see the steal though. Lol was still fun though.

To begin with, higher magnification does not always equate to "better" or an upgrade. I'll just leave it at that and let the crew continue.

I understand the statement and believe it to be totally true. just wondering if there's a better way. I've never actually had anything other than 3x9's my whole life they have served me well. Just kinda wanted this rifle to poke out a little further and kinda want to move this scope to another gun I have.

Nothing wrong with the SWFA 3-15 scope. It'll likely be in the $550 range on black Friday with good optics, good zoom range, and good tracking. You will then be able to be much more precise at 500 yards than using estimated holdovers with a duplex or BDC reticle. And 15x is a decent bit more zoom than 9x.

Bushnell 3-12X LRHS comes to mind. Bushnell is not the WalMart scope they used to be. Sure they still make some bottom end scopes, but they also make somehigh end, extremely clear, good tracking, good reticle scopes.

Get a Mil/Mil scope. You are smart enough to use it. They are not that difficult to operate, and once you learn how, they are what you will use on every rifle. There's hundreds of people I've taught Mil to that will tell you the same thing.

Looks like I'll have to up my up my budget on that bushnell! I had a member send me a pm about a new Leupold. Seems like a good scope from what I've seen. Might go with that.

I'll be watching for this sale. I have a XTR II 4-20 now on my heavy barreled 6mm and love it but want something lighter for my 7-08. Would go with the 3-15 XTR II but think the SWFA will be 150-200 cheaper.

It's a Leupold vx3 4.5-14x40. Anyone have any good experience with that exact scope?

It's going to make 500 yards more difficult than it has to be.

Any of you Bushnell owners have issues with tight eye boxes? The Elite Tactical LRS I looked through was really restrictive.

I have a couple or three of those and like them very much.

Do you mean side to side, or eye-relief front-to-back? I have the ET6245FJ (BTR-MIL reticle, illuminated) on my CTR and I would say it's very good in both aspects.

I must be silly because my 308 has a 3-9 SWFA on it. It works great for hunting. loco_too

Touché! My own words used against me! lol. Don't get me wrong I love my 3x9's. That's all I have on most of the guns I own. I want a diff scope on this exact gun! That's why I had ask about the Nikon p308. Guess with no answers means go another route!

No, not on the LRHS.

Yep. Just depends on if you want to be able to dial your elevation. This scope (Bushy LRHS)gives you a very low profile turret nob design that most LR scopes don't offer. I'm very pleased with mine.

Side to side is specifically what I noticed as being pretty unforgiving on the LRS.

SWFA also has Samplelist.com which is demos and trade-ins. I got the 3-15 Mil as a demo and couldn't find a single mark on it. It was listed $100 cheaper than new and got Labor Day 10% off as well. I called and asked about the warranty, lifetime, regardless of where you got it. I'm not saying get this scope, and I'm not an expert, it was recommended to me by a trusted source on this site. I went to their brick and mortar to check it out and have conversed with them via email a couple times, top notch customer service. Good luck whatever you choose.

I’m fond of the Leupold VX3 4.5-14, but if you plan on shooting deer out past 300 or 400 or shooting targets at distance, you would be well served by a good turreted scope. As for which one would be the best for your needs, good luck with that. If I was in the market for another one, i’d for sure want a magnification range in the 3-15 or 4-16 range (personal preference), low turrets, return to zero turrets, and useable illumination. A couple of times recently, while hog hunting, i’ve wished for lower intensity illumination or just an illuminated dot.

SS 3-15 is a dang good scope for the money. The only thing that it lacks is optical clarity.
