6.5 Creedmoor, 21" , very light contour barrel
140gr .062 BC, 2600fps. Not sure ES or SD
groups .50-.75" at 100 yards

hypothetically, how far should this gun shoot (hit 10" steel) @ .75 MOA?

Owner hasn't shot it past 100 yet.

This is why I was asking. This was my set up last weekend. I had out to 300yards all around. The 3-10 was good, I just like more power for a solid set up

How many rounds do I have?

Honestly, it depends on the shooter. .75 moa at 100 would be over 1 moa distance. I'd say 600-700 yards, with the right wind call and correct elevation. In a hunting situation, the first round (cold bore shot) is the most important shot. So, how do you perform on first round hits at that distance as a shooter with that equipment?

My rule of thumb is... If you practice and become proficient at 1000 yards, your max hunting distance should be about half that for first round hit reliability. If the environmental situations won't allow it (too windy, etc), then your distance would decrease.

A lot depends on the rifle and shooter, light weight rifles as you have discovered are not as easy to shoot accurately and barrels heat up quickly but the rifle should be good for 300+ if the shooter is.

Stick to distances that have been shot with that rifle, scope, and load.

How it is doing at 100 yards may not correlate well how it will do at longer distances.

That scope does not appear to have parallax correction, which can have an effect at 300; not saying it will, just that it could.

Part of hunting is being mindful of avoiding causing unnecessary suffering of the animal.

So bottom line, stick to practiced and proven distances as a limit.

The gun will do lots of things, are you willing to do your due diligence and make sure you are capable of making an ethical shot that's fair to an animal?

It's usually not the gun holding anyone back, it's the idiot behind the trigger. And that goes for ALL of us.

There is a vast difference in Hypothetical and In Practice. Sounds like 100 yards is you max range with that rig at the moment.

good question, I will have to go back to notes, give me a minute. I couldn't remember when I posted this.

I would go to 300 as is but never longer until I test at longer ranges with cold bore,

This target was shot once (cold bore), then I shot the .22 for an hour, then took the second cold bore shot, so, I'm comfy with CBS if I do my part of course

This was a test target ES = 5, SD = 2 but for only 3 shots. This is a hunting gun, not a long range monster, just needing to know if I switch optic to more power with dials and parallax adjustment. I will have to beg JG for some range time and test out to 500

I shoot a 7 Rem. Mag it can shoot a lot better and further then I can lol
I limit myself to 400 yards cause at the range I can verify my drop and grouping and feel confident.
Also keep in mind shooting off a bench off sand bags is a lot different then shooting out in the field lol

The scope is the weak link, for shooting distance.

It usually is the weak link, for most rigs.

I have ran a LOT of different scopes, with good glass like you have, you have to go up to say 15x to get a noticeable increase in magnification, like counting points at 400 yards..

Looking at the Swarovski Z6i 5-30 or their Z8i. they are great optics and lightweight, which is major concern. I don't want the scope to weigh more than the rifle

I'll look at all optics at the Safari Club Convention, all the big players will be there.

and still won't have elevation adjustments that are worth a ****. It's not like you're backpacking in the mountains. Good luck with your deer watching this season.

Thank you.

Long Range, and Swarovski rifle scopes do not belong in the same sentence.

I have an X5 and after getting past the set up it is a pretty good scope. The turrets are cumbersome to get set but after that it is clear and predictable. True, I'd say there are better options. Bushnell LRHS for hunting set "ups" are good--everything past that gets pretty bulky.

FJG,

stick to the NXS or above.

The SHV is for the typical hunter, low round count and minimal dialing.

With patience, used NXSís can be picked up for not too much more than the SHV.

Almost all of my NFís have been purchased used. Never had a problem other having to adjust an ocular. 60 seconds of work to save $500.
