So I’ve always wondered. With seating dies, does the stem engage the ogive or just the bullet tip?
New lot of .284 bullets and using same CBTO my OAL is different (I know that length will diff from lot to lot).

Take the die apart, and you'll have your answer. I did. I changed the seating stem to a VLD seating stem. What’s the easy answer? You didn’t teach me that in class.

The reason they make VLD seating stems I would think is to prevent the tip of the bullet touching the end of the seating stem before it engages the ogive. Sounds like your new batch has a slightly different ogive....

From what I've seen the easy answer is, the stem engages about 1/8"+ below the meplate. But I'm not going on record as saying ALL of them engage that way. Though I've not seen different with Hornady, RCBS, and Redding.
