I have a food plot irrigation system but it has been down for a couple of months. The problems started in May 2016 with a lightning strike in the plot closest to the well which toasted just about everything. The three relay boxes and the pump/motor were replaced but I've just been chasing small problems since. As of yesterday, I think all is well so I did a full run on the plots today.




Irrigation has its own issues. If you need it in the fall, dry conditions causing the need, you probably are growing a crop for the armyworms. There are a lot fewer pitfalls in the spring and summer months.

It has been one of the best investments I've made. When I bought the ranch, it had an abandoned well that had been used at a drill site. I had it checked out; it was a great well and then had it grandfathered in our water district as an irrigation well. From there, it was just money and labor which both come hard. I would like to push water further back to additional plots, but that would take too much money or at least I'm not good with the expense against my family's needs. It would be one thing if I were growing row crops. Ditching needs to be deep, and it is hard to cut against the various brush species subsurface. It needs to be automated with rain sensors so that it doesn't get behind or ahead. Now there are even temperature sensors that can be programmed. Too bad there aren't armyworm detectors to switch to a premixed spray!

If some of you guys were to pool your money,say $20, for gas and car wash, I'll come to your area and wash my truck. That usually makes rain within 24 hours.

Finally got that rain yesterday, nice slow rain all day. Will know how much once its daylight. 40 days without, it really got dry with the high temperatures.
