Got all the gear loaded and the mule stowed on the trailer, ready to go in the morning. Still not sure I'll put a dog down but may drive the roads and hope for a covey I can check cord a pup into. I'm guessing dusty and green so wont be expecting much from scenting conditions and still a little jumpy about snakes. I'm a wait till a good killing frost kind of a guy and that may be what we have this weekend. Good luck.

More willpower than me if you run up a covey and don't deploy paws on the ground. If I would have known it was going to be 33 degrees to start out at my lease on the opening morn, I wouldnt be in the metromess today for sure

Not today for me. In Dallas this weekend for my son's passion in life, we are playing football at cowboy's stadium tomorrow! Birds can wait till next week!

I was packed and ready to roll until my son was kind enough to share his stomach bug with me. Needless to say, I'm not gonna make it and the dog is less than thrilled.

I put my 9 yo Britt on the ground this morning. I walked with her through some short to medium shinnery. I bumped one covey, dog finally made it around to scent cone on were they got up from and pointed. That was the only covey in an hour of running the dog.

Hunted different pasture this afternoon. 1 covey pointed, dog on the ground for about an hour. Did more riding than walking.

Wish I would have known it was going to be this cool the last weekend of Oct, I would have been out at the lease like rest of you.
Ended up running my 1 year old in that Sporting Dog Challenge yesterday that was posted on here a couple of weeks ago and she won with a perfect score, stuck the last pheasant with 2 seconds left. That Bird Dog Wars format of trial is pretty fun, first time I have ever done it. The North Texas Spaniel Club group of people are a open and friendly clan - fun deal for a young dog if they do it again.

Did what I planned, got the mule to the lease and drove the roads for a while looking for a covey to introduce the pup to birds. Wasn't in the right place at the right time. Got a trustworthy report of 11 coveys in half a day so looks like we have a decent number of birds (most coveys 10+). This freeze should knock down some of the green and next cool couple of days mid week we will be on them. I'm guessing the bird finding will get better as it gets cooler. I can live with 15-20 covey days. cheers

Just glad we have birds after all the dire forecasts. Got a couple of dogs that can find them so should be another fun year. And a special thanks to the people at Kawasaki for adding 10 years to my bird chasing.

5 coveys in 3 hrs
Too green, too windy, too dry today
Conditions much better yesterday
Great to be out
16 coveys 7 hours on ground over 2 days

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

Sounds like a good weekend, tell Giant I didn't recognize him at first. He looked like a model for Orvis.

One of my best leases was a 12 covey a day lease. All the dogs pointed birds.

This was a year of first for me? First year to quail hunt with a dog. First year to hunt public land. The dog did great all weekend. Struggled to find birds on the public land. First place we dropped out my dog pointed the only bird I shot. Way to many people out hunting the small public land (I should have expected that on opening weekend) went to about 5 different public places the only place that didn't have people also didn't have any birds. Found one spot we did jump 2 coveys but was to thick to get a shot.
Hunted the Matador this morning and and only heard two shots while we were there and never bumped any birds out of three different drops we made. While I don't claim to know much about quail hunting my friend I was hunting with has hunted quail for over 50 years so I feel like he knew what kind of places to drop out and look for birds.
We had planned on hunting for 5 days decided it was to dry and thick with green stuff.
That is about as good a report as I can give. I will be back later in the year I had a blast the dog did great and worked her butt off and I had a great time.

God Bless and Semper FI
