I have recently purchased one of those AR's from Cabelas that hey had on sale for 399.99 the regular price was 499.99. I told myself I would never venture into the AR world but at the 399 price I could not resist. I don't know much about them. I figure this would be good enough for a beginner. I have not picked it up yet they are shipping it to the store. It's a Anderson Manufacturing in a .223/5.56, I really don't know anything about them nor heard much about them. I wonder how many of the THF members got one too.

It has one of those picananny (how ever you spell it) type scope bases on it that is as long as the top of it so all I need is rings and a scope. I do not know if I can use a regular rifle scope or if these AR's require a different type of scope just for AR's. So what kind of scope?

I want a 1" and no bigger then a 44 on the bell, I really don't expect to shoot past 100 yards nor do I expect to use it much. So I am also working on a budget of about 200 range, I could go more if it was really a good deal on a good scope. It will probably ride around in the truck to shoot what ever I don't like in my pasture and off the bench some.

So, what type, brand, size and what ever else there is.

thanks everyone.

You can mount whatever scope you like on an AR. Be prepared to spend a few bucks for a decent mounting system, though...don't go cheesy.

If I had to buy a scope for under $200, I think I'd look at the Burris Fullfield II line.

I have a Nikon P-223 on mine. It is fixed 3x, but shoots well. If you only plan on shooting 100 yds this will cover the budget and work well. I have a feeling you will like shooting the AR and need more ammo.

^^Solid advice.

I will add, the opinion of many of us is the best scope for an AR is a 1-6x or 1-8x. That's going to get into more money, but the end result is a very handy rifle system. In that case lots of people are loving the Vortex Strike Eagle as an inexpensive option.

I’d put a Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35 on it or a Minox ZV 3 3-9x40 from Camera Land on it.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I have a vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 on my AR and I like it. It's a bit heavy though. I like the 1x for quick and close shots. The optical quality is pretty good for the price range and it has an illuminated reticle. They've gotten cheaper since the 1x8 came out. Also, I put it in the vortex cantilever mount.

thanks everyone, I check into all these, i'll see who has them and might make a day trip looking them over when I go pick up my new toy. if anyone else wants to chime in with more ideas,

has any one had any luck with having open sights on it?
with my eye sight I prob need a scope though, but I seen one with a front sight that had a fronsling swivel on it and a rear flip up sight, made me stop and think, maybe I could do it but not sure.

thanks again everyone

I put an old 3x9 scope I had laying around on mine, and it works very well. I leave it on 3 power most of the time and have a good field of view and can get on target quickly, but have the option of going up to 9 power if I'm target shooting.

The scope depends on how you plan to use your AR. I have 2 main 223 uppers I use. One has a Burris 1-4x power scope I use for competition and CQB stuff. I like the true 1x scope for close in work to keep both eyes open during shooting. With the 4x power, I am good out to 500-600 yards, no problem.

My other 223 AR wears a 3x-9x Super Sniper FFP mil/mil scope, and is for more precision work. I set the turrets to zero, and I can either dial the turrets or hold with the reticle for drop. I like this scope also. With the low end of 3x, it's good for hunting and some closer shots, but IMO, not the best set up for CQB.

If I had to pick one, I'd go 1x-4x for the over all use.

Strike Eagle is a good option (I have one in my bag, replaced with an ACOG), a little heavy like someone else said and with a reliable mount is probably going to run about $500 (over double your mentioned budget). My question though would be why a scope at all if your sticking inside of 100yds as you stated (I guess the scope would give you the flexibility to reach out further if you wanted) - but for your application as stated I would stick to good irons and or a red dot optic of which you would probably find plenty of in that price range for a budget minded plinker 223.

Couple good choices in red dot reflex optics;

Bering Optics Prismatic Supra 3.0x32 gives you a good fixed "magnification" (3x) option and I think they're on sale at optics planet right now - around $230

Vortex StrikeFire II Sight w/ 4 MOA Dot gives you a standard fixed 1x reflex also on sale at about $180 - Vortex also has a 3x magnification flip over you could add to it later if you really decided you wanted for more money - lol

both are good options

A different reflex style option - Burris FastFire III Red Dot Reflex Sight, w/Picatinny Mount (3 MOA reticle) - think they're on sale too at about $240

all of them good quality for the price point and all come with their pica-mount's

For 200 Clams, all you can score is a POS,that will fail.

Save and do it right...that way you will have something other than disappointment(s).

Don't take the bait................

Go with a 1-4/6/8, depending on budget.
