I usually take my 270 or 6.8 for deer season.

My uncle gave me a 1971 Marlin 30/30 with a old weaver scope. Very original, he only hunted once with it.

Most my shots are around 100 yards and closer. May 120 yards.

What do y'all recommend to put down a whitetail? , drop at 50 and 100 yards....

150's or 170's JSP are the two most common. I load and shoot mainly 150's.

Yup. I've had extremely good luck with handloaded Remington core-lokt 150's.

It's hard to go wrong with these, if your rifle shoots them well:

Interestingly enough both of my 30.30's shoot everything well except for the Hornady leverevolution bullets and loads. I was pretty disappointed as I really like Hornady's flex tip bullets in my revolvers and have even loaded the 45's in my 1911.
For my 30.30 handloads though I prefer Speer hotcor 150 grains.

You are not the only one. Hornady LE ammo accuracy in mine is sub par compared to corloks & Win PP

My Win '94 is in love with Winchester Power Point 150gr.

And they will kill a whitetail completely dead.

How can you be sure? Completely dead is much harder to determine, no?

Mine as well. Don't know why but they wouldn't group worth a darn. Switch over to Federal blue box or Winchester PP in 170 grain, and the groups tighten right up.

In my experience " completely dead" is the easiest dead to determine.

go to walmart or academy or your lgs and find some
remington or winchester or federal plain ol' 150
or 170 grain ammo, whatever shoots best out of the
gun. you don't need any special ammo out of a 30/30
to make clean one-shot kills.
and no, it won't turn down into the ground at 100 yards
despite what the gun writers have been saying for decades.
a properly zeroed 30/30 is adequate for deer for every place
i've ever hunted in Texas. you shouldn't feel undergunned
at all if you can hit the pump house. it's got plenty of soup
to poke a hole

The reason the Hornady Leverevolution and Superformance ammo doesn't shoot as good is because they are using a very slow burning powder and using a lot of it to get the speeds higher than normal. They run faster, but at the cost of taking the round out of the sweet spot. When working up a load, you can go aggressive with a slow burn rate powder to get the speeds up, but the sweet spot for accuracy has a much smaller accuracy node. If you keep everything the same but go to an adequate burn rate powder (or normal burn rate powder for the cartridge and bullet weight), the sweet spot is easier and much bigger to find. Anytime I can not get a round to shoot well with a slower burning powder, I will switch to a faster burning powder for a larger sweet spot.

This is the same idea why some ammo runs slower, but shoots good in MANY rifles. A faster burn rate powder is used for a larger sweet spot and speeds are slightly reduced some.

If you are shooting a Marlin with the micro groove barrel, you will have problems with the Hornady LE ammo. I sent pics to Hornady with the LE ammo and cheap Fed ammo, two different worlds. LE was key holing at 50 yds and Fed ammo had shots touching. Hornady finally admitted that the Marlins with the micro groove Barrels had problems with the LE ammo unless you cleaned barrel every 10 to 15 shots. I quit using it!!!!

Yes...it will definitely do the job even at 120 yards.

My 1976 model Glenfield 30A loves the LeveRevolution 160 grain. I would feel comfortable taking a 150 yard shot with no hesitation. Do not believe it is the micro groove barrel though.

Also the Lever evolution stuff shoots fine out of my 1978 vintage Marlin 36.

To be determined

Guys.
Stop over thinking it. It is a 30/30. Anything that shoots straight out of it will get the job done.

Just my 2 pennies.

I'd add my 2 pennies to TGillar's! It's a killer caliber at the proper range and with the fodder it likes to digest. Go for it and take the time to figure out the load it loves!

I don't believe it's been over thought here. A question was asked.
Several have mentioned off the shelf inexpensive
options all of which work fine.
What I haven't seen is
"my recipe is xx grains of ABC pushing an XYZ...".

That would be over thinking.

I know this is pricey a box but has worked excellent in my two 30-30s

My marlin 30-30 likes 170 grain ammo better than 150 grain. I've killed plenty of deer with both grains.

Compared to the ammo for my 7mm Ultra or my .378 Wby, that's virtually free.

wink
